My buddy and I doubled up on bears last year. I shot mine and when I was filling the tag out a second bear came running in.

Exciting trip! Smoked a limit of ducks and got my first wood duck.

Bears any good to eat? Gut and skin and take to the butcher?

Buck Down, harvested in A-Zone General Rifle 2025, this week, public land in 100-102 degrees, second buck I ever harvested, first was 2 years ago. Hopes went down, took a nap on a hillside under a tree, woke up to a snap of a twig/branch, presented himself at 48 yards amongst some fallen oak. Down side was I unloaded before my nap, had to slowly insert the mag, slowly load a round, while my heart rate went up and adrenaline started pumping; I was lightly trembling. I needed to be slow enough to not scare him off, but also not too slow where I am taking too long. He was looking in my direction but then would look away which I guess meant he wasn’t sure if I was there since I was in the shade under multiple trees; he didn’t keep a solid locked on gaze with eyes wide open. Wind was also in my favor as it was stagnant.

I needed to fire from a position I never practiced before, slightly laid back but sitting upwards, after wake up from a nap, left support hand on left knee with left foot planted on slope, aiming left and slightly uphill, spine twisting left and slightly uphill, right leg laid flat and slightly downhill; while sitting on that slant slope hillside. 7mm-08 Remington Barnes TTSX 120 grain; zero’d for 200.

Didn’t see where he ran since he was uphill, but I did notice he turned back and he raised/bucked up his two front quarters up like he was hit. I worked a span of about 75 yards of a circle, getting worried I lost him, but knew I hit him so I needed continue to look; I found him completing the circle run around about 20-30 mins later. Turns out he only ran about 20-25 yards; but that tall dry brush really conceals for something laying down.

I wonder if .308 Winchester, .300 win mag, 12 gauge slug bolt action rifled barrel slug gun, or other higher recoiling caliber compared to a lighter recoiling caliber such as 7mm-08 Remington in that shooting position would hurt my spine or cause back ache?

I also learned that one of my uncles wants the testicales next time for Rocky Mountain oysters ; believes it is a valuable delicacy and increases libido? Too bad I threw it away on the hillside.
