One of these birds (I think it was the female) flew off of a hill above me, on my left.

It was crossing at about a 60 degree angle to my right and I winged it.
Not my best shot, but not my worst either.

It veered right and flew head first straight into the trunk of a palm tree, hitting it dead center. "Bonk"!
It bounced off the tree and fell to the ground unconscious.

My dog then retrieved it for me.

It was almost a decade ago and I still laugh when I think about it.

Just got back from a trip down south of the border. Applied for pigs and turkey in CA. Will hunt coyotes in April.

Here’s the sad little forky I got this year. It was good eating though. I personally always take any decent deer that’s legal. It’s only bit me in the rear once. I have a couple buddies that are always passing on stuff looking for the trophy and end up with unfilled tags.

I put four deer in the freezer last fall. The wife says I can't go hunting any more until I make space.

We ate the last deer quick and can’t seem to eat the pigs as quick as we kill them. My wife also tried to drop the ban hammer on pig hunts until we use up what’s in the freezer. I found a combination of making and gifting jerky and just generically giving away gift boxes of meat has made more than enough space for more pigs

I've been eating it and giving it away, and still have a freezer full. The good news is that I'm done with 2022 (only a few bits at the bottom of the freezer), 2023, and most of 2024. Still have some Texas pig from 2023, but it's going fast. The good news is that I'll have room for a couple more by fall.

BTW, Javelina makes excellent chili and chili verde, and ground up with pork fat makes a very tasty hamburger and meatloaf.

You're lucky to have access to pigs on private property - I envy you. When I lived in CA pigs were my jam, and I did pretty good at Liggett. There are no pigs here in Idaho. That's one of the very few things I miss about CA. Here are a couple of Liggett pigs I got in the past:

Do you mean Leggett? That’s not too far south of me. I am lucky and for those looking to get into it what I’ve discovered is if a rancher or farmer offers you access to hunt just be respectful, offer to help and don’t drink on their property. I’ve gotten so many referrals to other farmers and ranchers from folks and they all say they want people to come kill the pigs because they’re a problem but a lot of guys drink alcohol and the landowners find it off putting as they don’t want intoxicated people with firearms on their property. I can’t really blame them.

Fort Hunter-Liggett - Military base west of King City that allows civilian hunting if you jump though their hoops.

Ahhhhhhhh, makes sense. My buddy was stationed in Texas and said you could hunt some kind of non native African game animal that had gotten loose and become problematic there. He showed me photos of ones he’d shot and they looked huge. For the life of me I can’t remember what they were called.

Went on a planted chukar hunt yesterday with a good friend of mine.

It was 29° when we checked in a bit past 7am.
Once the sun rose above the hills, it was a little warmer as long as you weren’t in the shade.
It was very comfortable hunting in a t-shirt with a light long sleeved hunting shirt.
It was perfect weather for man and beasts (the dogs).
We were in the field hunting a little before 8am.

Had a great time, contacted all 30 birds that had been put out.
1 bird escaped unscathed.
2 birds got hit and managed to elude capture.
5 birds didn’t want to fly, they ran jogged and hopped a few times (wasn’t too happy about that, but I guess it happens). They ended up being captured by one of the dogs. The dogs must want to be considered to be hunters as well.
The rest of the birds were taken using the preferred approach.
All told 27 out of the 30 came home with us.

We were done a little before noon.
All in all, it was a great way to spend the day.

Totally awesome. Chukar is so succulent and tasty! Too bad a few didn't want to cooperate, but 27/30 is a pretty good tally!!

Since the season is almost here! My last years bird.

I was drawn this year. Hoping I can make it happen. Last turkey trip was 3 years ago. Got my nephew a nice bird.

My buddy and I doubled up on bears last year. I shot mine and when I was filling the tag out a second bear came running in.

Exciting trip! Smoked a limit of ducks and got my first wood duck.
