Pics HUNTING PHOTOS THREAD

Went out for quail on Monday.
It was a beautiful day.
Clear skies, no wind and a high of 64.

On one flush, I took a shot and was sure I hit it, but I didn't see it fall.
I quickly swung 90 degrees left for the second shot and nailed that one.
I never looked back to the first one, I was watching the dog retrieve the second one.

My buddy was about 20 yards behind me, and watched the whole thing.
He said I hit the first one, it veered upwards, then it went straight up,
then helicoptered down.
From what he described, I thought I brained it.
But since it didn't drop like a rock, I don't think I did.
We never found it.

It was a fun day and the dog really enjoyed herself.

Awesome.
Need a better photo of the bird.
GSP?
Yep, GSP, I do need a better photo but my hunting partner is the photo nerd and this is all I have haha

Tell us more about the dog.
Age, sex, weight, other birds the dog hunts, how long you've had the dog, etc.
Professionally trained or home schooled?
A good bird dog is better than most things in life.

He's 5, 80lbs!!!! His dad is a Standing Stone dog and mom from Willow Creek so good lineage and a lot of the german line so he is black instead of liver. I've done all the training for better or for worse, I did my own force fetch and shockingly it actually worked haha. great retriever in general but working on some more specific blind retrieving techniques. I mostly duck hunt, done a bit of quail and he's a decent pointer but we haven't had the wild bird experience to not bust wild birds. He's a pro on planted birds but wild birds are a whole other game. Would like to do more upland but I haven't found great spots, most public land with a few hours of Sacramento are hunted to oblivion and the birds will flush and hide in the blackberries long before the dog or I are even close. Definitely a great companion for everything, GSPs have a lot of personality and he's a lot of fun. Carries his own stuff when we backpack and never gets tired.PXL_20251207_154752004.webp

I saw one covey of quail on Monday.
I guess I didn't have my game face on or wasn't very focused.
Took 2 shots and missed both.

I was surprised when we saw 6 or seven dove in the middle of the mountain road we were driving on.
I thought they would have flown elsewhere by now.

They are more smarter later in the season around this time due to the pressure. I haven’t gone out for quail this season yet, been too busy, but in mid-january for last season, for my solo backpacking trip, the different coveys either would flush way early or flush way late after walking past them; but sometimes there were times where they just surprised me in front of me when I least expected it. I noticed they tended to not alarm peet anymore before approaching. Took patience waiting for their assembly call after the rocket flush; as they didn’t assembly call right away like earlier in the season.

We hunted over American Brittany's yesterday and managed to have a great time while knocking down a few birds.
The amazing part of the hunt was a hen that we took some hail mary shots at.
I didn't see any feathers fly, it was high and far, flying away from us.
It sailed a couple hundred yards over a hill and disappeared. :(

A while later about the same thing happened but the bird went to the left of the hill and went down in meadow covered in short grass.
I thought this one would be easy to find, but the dogs never seemed to pick up any scent.

We went around the backside of the hill and one of the dogs went up the hill about 25 feet and sat down and held his gaze, staring 20+ feet up a tree.
We climbed the hill and eventually saw what he was looking at. A pheasant slumped over on a branch up in the tree.
Had to knock it out of the tree to get it.
