YouTube/GunTube Policy change - what do you think?

YouTube is killing sponsored Guntube videos. Only guns you buy on your own is allowed now. No more “they sent it to me”.

We have a home for you guys!

I’m telling you, it’s really tough in this space. Being blacklisted totally screwed me and my other business and now my rates went from 2.7% to 6-7% for cc fee.

I don’t post gun content on YouTube but I’ve been considering it for my competition footage. Even with no immediate damages, or skin in the game, I feel attacked.

Makes me want to revisit Section 230.

I believe Chris buys his own guns from donations and not gifts or samples from manufacturers

I’ve been quietly downloading gun smithing videos from YouTube. Disassembly and reassembly of guns I own. Repairs. Modifications. I’ve got a hard drive with them backed up. I think it’s just a matter of time before they get taken down. If there is a complete disassembly/ reassembly of a rifle or pistol you own or want to build. I would download the video as a fail safe sooner than later.

He definitely has been sent or provided various 2011s to review or on loan - both from the manufacturers and from some FFLs/shops. Maybe not as much of the lower cost stuff, but there's been several instances for his 2011 reviews.

While I’m not happy about it targeting *only* gun-related ‘branded content’, YT (Alphabet) is a private company and they can do what they want.

As others have posted, the creators (shills??) will have to get, um, *creative* and make sure to say, ‘Bought with my own funds’ at the start of a video or something like that.

Admittedly my reaction is emotional blind swinging.

Admittedly, I’ve never moderated content or a discussion board.

My statement is VERY ignorant of the real challenges.

I realize it’s important to a lot of platforms, protecting the platform from the stupid, crazy or abhorrent content people may use it for HOWEVER I believe that there is some point a platform or publisher crosses the line from a private business or service and becomes more akin to a public utility or public square.

This being said, the targeted YouTube rule, if it applies only to firearm and ammo promotion, marketing and/or advertisement seems to rhyme in many ways with what we in the firearm community dealt with in the vampire rule cases; it mandates speech and requires expressed permission to use a privately owned, but publically used space; this being the “town square” that is YouTube.

If this were the aforementioned abhorrent content, I would find the rule more appropriate and reasonable, but since it is legal and tasteful marketing and promotion of a constitutional right, I find the rule to be an abuse of power, I anticipate the platform would hide behind section 230 to avoid the 1A, 2A and interstate commerce lawsuits that it deserves as a response.

I think this may be narrower than we think.

AFAIK, Guntubers don't usually get "free" products, they get review units that they have to send back.
For those that get to keep the review unit, yeah, that could be considered an "influence" on the video.

I think Nightwood guns is pretty unbiased with his reviews.

Guess I'm glad my channel is not big enough to anyone to want to send me free guns. Though, I'm a Fusion Firearms "Ambassador" and they claim they heavily discount firearms for the purposes of comparison. Pretty sure that would be purchasing it with my own $.
