Which Two Guns for SHTF

I would choose a semiautomatic rifle in 308 Winchester/7.62x51mm. I do like the M1A, but there are many rifles to choose from. An AR10 would be a good choice. Barrel would be 18" long.

My service pistol would be in 10mm, so I'd choose the Glock 20.4.

Remember this is SHTF, so carrying a small 9mm semiauto makes no sense. You can conceal far more gun than you think. The 10mm gets me low to middle 357 Magnum ballistics. I could go with a revolver in 44 Magnum, which could make quite a bit of sense in certain situations. However, humans will be the most powerful predator of other humans, so the Glock 20 wins. I can always use the rifle on critters.

This is quite the rabbit hole to go down, but there are lots of reasons for 9mm. Namely great ballistics, capacity, ease of shooting, and availability. Lmao @ 44 magnum. Too many Dirty Harry movies for you.

Might not be up to you concerning where you stay. If you can stay at home indefinitely, I might suggest the TS HAS NOT HTF in your local yet.

There's been an interesting prepper forum post going around written by a man who survived the Bosnian civil war. He wrote a few thousand words in response to prepper questions about how he survived. The civil war (built on religious reasons) was the S Hitting The Fan. He said gangs of people would roam , day and night, looking to loot/rob/kill. Snipers would should at random during the day time. People traded for food, ammo, supplies, etc. I highly recommend people read his post.

He explains that for him and his family of city-dwellers the only option was to stay at home and defend. They had high walls and lots of people to take shifts in guarding, cooking, etc. He adds (near the end) that if he'd had the option to flee to a more remote area like a well-stocked cabin, he would have.

My point is that one's ability to stay at home does not mean that feces has not been flung into the fan blade. "SHTF" can have many definitions but it seems like the overlap is some kind of collapse for the rule of law, a lack of civil order, and a lack of safety.

I always like to think about "that other guy" who chooses the 2 worst possible guns for shtf...out there running around with a single shot long barrel .410 and a Beretta 96 in .357 sig, or .45Gap.

Not that xd's or 410's are bad...but terrible "for that purpose" for sure!

I would pick a Glock (preferably a 9mm). Easy to service and the reliability is second to none.

Honestly if SHTF and the world was ending, I'd be torn between taking my glock 19 or my 2011.

My heart says 2011, but my brain says glock just makes sense in terms of reliability and finding spare parts

I would go with a BCM + Aero AR build with an lpvo plus a Glock 19 Gen 5 with a trijicon rmr. The parts and ammo availability can’t be beaten, and 9mm is more than adequate for general self-defense (the rifle would be a fallback weapon). I haven’t had much experience with shotguns, but something like a Mossberg 590 or Beretta 1301 would be my second choice for a long gun as you can hunt pretty much everything in California with one.

You can only use a Gen3 according to the rules! lol

Definitely going with a carbine in 556 with magnification and sidearm in 9mm.

Just about any duty type sidearm is also concealable so take your pick. I'm taking my CZ 75 SP01 because it's reliable, accurate, and it can double as a steel club when ammo runs out.

I agree with another post that said they want to avoid CQB. That is a sure way to get yourself killed. Would rather keep danger at a distance and avoid it as much as possible. Name of the game is don't draw attention.

And this, FN / FNC, folding stock will fit in a backpack, no assembly required, takes AR / M16 mags, I have several.

For me, most of my training is on AR and glock 19 / m9 beretta.
Honestly barely shot handguns in the infantry, so my sidearm is just for when my rifle is down.

Glock 26 & AR15 carbine. I'll have Glock 17 mags for the G26. I could possibly bring a 18" barreled 12ga pump with a bird's head grip if there's room.

During a SHTF event, if you are bugging out but has no pre-planned destination, it's better to stay put since you'll still have all the resources at home. If it is a natural disaster, wildfire, evacuation then something compact, concealable as you will likely end up at some shelter with many other people. A rifle/shotgun sling at your back is going to draw too many unwanted attentions. Frankly it is more important to bring medication, food and water.

Unless you're a seasoned hunter/outdoorsman, to think you will survive in the wild without any pre-planning is just fantasy. You will join the rest of the city dwellers starving or killing each other.

Despite all the movies, the best chance of survival after a SHTF event is to band together with your neighbors and defend your neighborhood. The worst danger will be roaming gangs of robbers looking for food, resources. If the situation looks like will be extended, secure source of clean water, and start farming.

In a perfect world (or another state,) belt fed, crew served backed up by any rifle in the same caliber. With my budget, M1A Standard with a sling and an M9A1 with a Brigadier slide.

I'm surprised at the lack of shotgun votes, I'd definitely pick one over a rifle since they're so versatile. Heck, you can even shoot pistol rounds through them with those shell adapters.
