What are the Total Costs for CCW these days?

Yeah like somebody else on here mentioned…around $1900-2000 total, depending on how much 16 hour course cost you. I’m in Santa Clara county.

I’m not adding ammo costs (some courses ask you to bring 200 rounds per firearm)…paying for ammo doesn’t bother me since you get to either have some fun shooting or save it lol

Yeah I paid 1100 in Alameda county as of 2024. Not that bad if I’m being honest but was hoping it was cheaper.

Im in Alameda, and as of May thru Sept 2025, it definitely was over $1k:

- initial filing fee: $93 (livescan incld)
- psych. - $410
- testing - $420
- final fee - $387

That's the bare minimum from my onboarding experience totaling $1,310. Of course, it doesn't include hours of training and thousands of rounds. I also took several holster training courses, while optional, I'd recommend. My qualification class was a mixed bag. One person failed and one withdrew himself unable to finish.

Alameda has timed shots from the holster & low ready ranging from 2 yards to 25 yards. Its not a hard course, but it's harder than a lot of the counties out there - watching John Wick wont help you pass. Funny to compare, I have a good friend in Orange County that his qualification is 3 to 7 yards; adding EDCs to your permit are unlimited and done with a 20 rd qualification from 5 & 7 yards.

Sacramento county - $650.00
If you move during your 2 year “term” before renewal, they steal another $155.00 from you. I’m 1 year in and $805.00 after my recent change of apartment unit - literally a 3-digit number “ccw modification.”

Mods for change of address used to be $10. How can this possibly be the cost of an automated system change?

Board of supervisors wanted a money maker I guess… after the credit card fee and the online processing fee fee my CCW mod was like $165.

I buddy was at a local gun store and the owner told him "It costs over $2,000 now to get a CCW". Mine was two years ago and I don't think it was that much. The owner also told him "You now have to pay out of pocket for a phycological evaluation". That doesn't seem right either.

Curious what the costs are now:
  • Live Scan = $
  • Application fees $
  • 2-Day Training = $
  • Other = $
Didn't DOJ just filed an intention to sue San Jose because the cost of license only is about $1600? With the total pushing $2400?

My CCW costed around 2k total. Wait time: 8 months. I got this from local PD city of San Ramon. I was one of the first people applied since local PD open up their own CCW program instead of Contra Costa County.

In my opinion, psy eval is very useless and costly, and need to be cross off the list. Since I also had an interview with the Sgt in charge in person. He asked the same questions as the psychologist.

Training class prices have jumped since the initial is 16 hours now ($300 ish) and some cities require a psych exam. $500
