CCW Santa Clara County CCW Thread

Moving to California, was wondering how hard it is to get a CCW in Santa Clara? How long should one expect to wait before seeing anything after applying. I remember several years ago, SCC was nearly impossible to get a CCW but it sound like this is no longer the case based on some comments on this thread.

Santa Clara County can be a wait and by the time you are finished its 3 guns for over $2K on the initial application. A lot of these fees go to training and Psych eval which are not part of what you pay to Permitium. I'm not sure what the City of Santa Clara Charges but would like to know. From what I hear the wait is currently about 1 year from app to interview at the county. You can apply to either your city of residence (if they have a permit system) or the County of Santa Clara. A diary of my experience is earlier in this topic. Good luck.

I'm moving to San jose. 2k is insane but if that's the price to pay to be able to defend myself then it is what it is. Just like your cell phone once you used to carrying one you feel naked without it by your side.

FYI, San Jose is in Santa Clara County which also issues CCW. Fees are high, but I think much less than city of San Jose's fees. Getting it with County is more durable in case you move from San Jose to other city in the county, you don't have to redo your application at renewal.

Back in September it took about a week or so to get my “go ahead and book training” email. If it goes beyond two weeks you may want to email the sheriffs dept and ask if it has come through yet.
They were good in replying to my emails.

just wait patiently in the meantime you can take your ccw class with saber tactics. thats what I did. that way class is over and quali is done and over with. as soon as live scan been processed they will tell you to go ahead and take your 16 hour class. by that time your already done and your just submitting the papers. and your ccw will get issued.

I submitted my training certs to permitium almost 2 months ago but they haven't called me to issue the ccw or anything since then. Emails also went unanswered. So the app is just stuck waiting for "reference checks" to finish.. is anyone else in the same boat?

I finally made it down to the SCCSO two weeks ago. I asked the person behind the glass to clarify the time frame for renewals. Of course their first reaction was to tell me to check the Permitium website. I promptly told them that Permitum has nothing to do with the SCCSO policy and I suggested they should probably know this information since they are facing the public in the office. The officer then suggested this information is on the SCCSO website. I fired back with that specific information is NOT on the SCCSO website and if they could show me where it is, I would be grateful since I obviously missed it. They attempted to transfer me (you have to speak through a telephone) to the CCW department that never answered. The officer then told me to email them. Fabulous.

I fired off an email in the parking lot expecting not to hear back for quite some time. To my surprise, they responded maybe thCCW ree hours later and told me to start my renewal 90 days before expiration. I responded immediately asking about the fact that I just paid over $500 to Permitium and will I be able to let that hang in limbo until the beginning of July (my 90 day clock). I havent heard back as of yet. Funtimes.

Did you submit your renewal application on Permitium to SCCSO first before you signed up for the training with Saber? My CCW will be expired in December so I m not sure do i have to apply for renewal first and wait for them to tell me to go for training?

I am still on my initial permit so I haven’t renewed yet. My understanding is that within 90 days of expiration you have to do a few things:

1) Fill out Permitium and pay a fee
2) Take the renewal training.

What I think would work best is to go on Permitium 90 days out and get the application for renewal done.

You can schedule your renewal training at any time but my take is that training day must fall within the 90 day window.

As soon as you get the training certification sign and upload it and pay your final fee.

Wait for your call from the Sheriff to come down and swap permits

I intend on scheduling my training ahead of time for a date within the 90 day window. I’ll do my Permitium paperwork on the 89th day out and send my stuff in promptly. That way I don’t have to worry about deadlines and delays.

I just got a (quick) response from Santa Clara Sheriff's Office CCW Dept and here is their quote: "You do not need to complete a Live Scan as part of the renewal process. You do need to complete the 8 hour renewal training. You need to upload the CCW training completion within 90 days of the permit's expiration."

From what I've heard- that with hefty time intervals between each step. Patience, loads and loads of it.

Remember, only for Renewals
When applying through Permitium, one can easily upload two different forms of residency bills, each comprised of two consecutive recent months (i.e. water bill, PG&E). In addition, a copy of driver license, and a signature form (which is captured by Permitium through the application process). The only thing left is to upload the certificate from training (8hrs classroom, qualification at the range with all guns listed in the application).
Then you wait.
You will get an email from SCSO CCW office (and maybe a text message from Permitium) scheduling a time to pick up your new license and forfeit your old one. I am unsure whether an interview occurs during that process or not. My educated guess is NO interview.

Small update in my situation - initially Live Scanned at Meridian; passed FBI/DOJ/Firearms on the DOJ website but had no response from the CCW unit even after emailing them for 4 weeks. Re-live scanned at a designated SCC SO Live scan office on Monday, passed all checks Wednesday and got the email to proceed to training on the same day.
