CCW Santa Clara County CCW Thread

To be honest, I wish they were more strict on who they give permits too. When I was in LAPD interview was overhearing some other applicants, could not even properly show proof of residence.. do we really want people like that packing?? Just sayin..
What stops them packing regardless?

It's not like MS13 members are getting CCWs...
Yes a lot of gun owners need far more training, but one can say the same about reading comprehension or grammar online too.

Update:

Received my CCW on Thursday 3 October

Applied for Modification which is $20

Submitted my Modification Application that night 10/3

Friday 15 November got a call from Deputy at 0727 AM stating that when I am available to pick up

Friday 15 November at 0930 arrived at SC Sheriff and he took my in right away; surrender your old card and new pic taken and fingerprint

Was in and out within 10 mins had a little chat

Total waiting time for modification is 6 weeks per my experience - fyi they are busy.
Do u have to do a reshoot to add/modify a gun?

hi there, i have my appointment with the sheriff department in march. I was wondering if theres anything I need to bring with me to the interview? (submitted application online)

In Solano county , it was much quicker and less hassle. Sorry for you guys. Never did a psych exam. I’ve had a CCW for 6 years. No where near that cost .
When? I applied in August 2021, interviewed w/Pinder 10/21 and didn't get my ok to proceed until 12/22 (I had a CCW in Sac County for 10 years before I moved to Vacaville)

Just id, provided u submitted all your bills etc online. They don't need a more recent copy (I submitted app in Oct 2023 with proof of residency then, went for interview in late sep 24).
I took copies of everything including application just in case but they don't ask for anything except id

Make sure your app has complete and accurate info. The questions are basic ones about your past especially any previous police contact They also ask about employment history. It’s pretty much what you would expect.

Wasn’t bad at all and there are no “trick questions “ or “traps”

Applied for the 1st time in late 2018, got CCW by Spring 2019 . I would have to look on Calguns, but i think it took 6-7 months if I recall. You can submit renewal 60 days before and I get mine in by day 59. That’s been pretty quick too. I’ll be renewing this spring.

Question: my wife is about to go through the livescan portion and then start her training. Problem is that she does not have any handgun registered to her. We will need to do a transfer from me to her. Can this be done without going to an FFL (ie, just forms and then pay $)? If it is faster through an FFL, we can do that.

I think I read somewhere that the gun could be owned by a spouse. If you have gotten as far as live scan you listed your firearms and they ran them through the DOJ

I tend to have a very low opinion on the county doing their due diligence or being very clear in directions. The firearms listed at the time of application were all registered to me, not to the wife. I guess I can always ask the Sheriff's office for clarification, but there's a chance 2 people will give me 3 different opinions. Or I suppose I can ask my local FFL as well.

I recently traded my gun that was originally on the application (still waiting for the interview), it doesn't let me change my gun on the application. People who experienced this, did you guys just wait til the interview to let them know?

Can't modify it until they issue your CCW Card.

so i would have to actually qualify with the one that was on my application?
Correct, because I tried to do the same thing, and the guy said, they are unable to modify while your app is in process.

Modify will commence once the card ccw has been issued then you can modify after.

My modification took 4 weeks fyi.

Approved to proceed with LiveScan.
Is it mandatory I do it at the sheriff’s station?
There’s no language with the option to do it elsewhere.

You can do it wherever livescan is offered, but there is a level of knowledge required of the live scan operator for CCW permit livescans. I did not want to wait and went to Meridian Live Scan in San Jose. They were 2Xmore costly than the sheriff but also same day instead of 3 weeks and the tech was very familiar with the paperwork. Be sure to get your number so you can track the results online.

Finally, got my approval for training today. Signed up with Bill Tidwell for my 16-hr class this weekend.

This has been a nearly two year ordeal for me. I applied Feb ‘23, my interview appointment was scheduled for August ‘23. August comes around and it turns out my district moved the first day of school up a week which just happened to be the day of my interview. Rescheduled the interview to the next available appointment, July ‘24 (!). Psych exam and interview was in October ‘24. Livescan was completed Christmas ‘24 and got approval today. The only silver lining to this Mongolian clusterF- of a process is that I am grandfathered into the old fee structure and is relative bargain compared to the current fee schedule.
