CCW Sacramento County CCW

It's not contact initiated by law enforcement. It's any contact. However, that does not include the, "Hello, Officer", as you pass on the street type of contact.

The condition is in the paragraph immediately above the one you quoted, Page 2, Second Bullet entry:

CONDITIONS ON APPROVED PERMITS

I am blind. thank you

The OP asked about mags and optics but does anyone know how the county feels about altering barrels, slides cops, etc?

My instructor said if LE asks for your driver’s license, that’s “contact with LE.”

It was told to pull out your ccw with your license.

Because, if the friendly officer has asked for your license, you have been detained for a reason.

The policy noted above, also requires that, if you make contact, you must advise the officer that you have a CCW and whether or not you are carrying. Since SB 2 now makes it a requirement (if carrying) to carry the card and the policy mirrors this requirement, presenting it to the LEO makes sense.

First line of the "Conditions" Statement:
No firearm is permitted to be carried unless qualification documentation is on file with this Office and the weapon is listed on the CCW Permit.
As long as you don't exceed those guidelines, you should be good.
With that, obviously, stay away from threaded barrels. But, some barrels carry the firearm serial number, and an argument could be made that alters the gun away from what you qualified with, so tread carefully. Frankly, for the distances anticipated in a CCW encounter, a barrel alteration isn't going to provide significant advantage.
Sac Sheriff has never issued guidance on Magazine capacity or sights/optics. As long as what you're carrying is legal, you are legal.
As a side note, when I renewed last week, I was told that the SSD is transitioning to RDS optics.

I don't understand your "slides cops" entry.

@Dvrjon thanks for your input. Please disregard "slides cops" as it should have stated "slides, comps".

My question stems from the popularity of aftermarket compensators that do not required threaded barrels, such as Afterburner/Ramjet. When installing the comps the LCI tend to accidentally go missing durning the installation. Not something people seem to be worried about for a non-carry handgun but would hate to risk CCW compliance.

I may have to reach out to SSD directly at some point.

Losing the CLI ON A CCW gun is a non-issue in the real world (unless your IA has a policy of “factory correct” firearms.). The CLI provides a physical reminder that the round is chambered. If you purposely shoot someone, the CLI is irrelevant.

However.

Playing “Mother May I?”, with the IA is not recommended.

Currently, there is no written policy on a lot of issues surrounding equipment. The Sac Sheriffs have historically stayed away from that level of constriction. If you are interested in changing that and having additional enumerated conditions and restrictions placed on ALL of our CCW weapons, please go right ahead and start asking questions of the IA. (Note: that was sarcasm…do not do that.)

The Sheriff has entrusted you to use your common sense in carrying a loaded, concealed weapon. If the written policy is silent on an issue, you are expected to use your head and act appropriately and legally.

Re: comps on CCWs. Comps are cool, but in these chamberings and with short barrels, they have limited use. I have an Afterburner/Ramjet for my G19.3. It provides marginal reduction of recoil while producing a distracting muzzle flash (especially in the dark.) At CCW engagement distances, I don’t think it provides an advantage in follow-up shot time. It extends the G19 to G17 barrel length requiring an additional effort in the draw stroke to clear the holster, but doesn’t extend the sight radius to improve sight picture.

I’m old, and have resisted moving from iron sights for a long time. I had a red dot on a revolver in the 80’s which was interesting, but bulky. I have recently converted to red dots on handguns, and if I had an extra $20 grand laying around, I’d contract to convert a large number of my guns to dots.

If you don’t have one, take the comp money and get one, then learn to use it.

Best.

Thank you for sharing! Looks like they lightened up. With the new administration in the WH, y'all think that our regulations and restrictions will lessen?

I'm in West Sacramento but I can imagine it's similar. Need to look it up. Been meaning to apply for some time now but keep getting sidetracked with life and travels.

Anyone know how long West Sac is taking now for interview to course? It's the police chief who is the IA and they seem more lax.

I'm hoping to come back from overseas and there is none is this, haha

The WH has nothing to do with this. Sac adopted the State (BSIS) standards for licensed armed guards to get the Legislature out of the Sac CCW business. It’s been that way for at least 10 years, and Sheriff Cooper is finally making stuff more reasonable.

Approved Course of Fire

The live-fire portion of the training shall be demonstrated with ALL weapons to be listed on the license. The target shall measure 12 X 16 inches and must be capable of being scored. Applicants are required to have a minimum passing score of 80%.

No firearms that traditionally would fall under the rifle category will be approved for the permit. Examples would be AR Pistols, AK pistols or any variants of these types of firearms.

I figured if SCOTUS rules on, let's say, lifting assault rifle bans, states would need to comply? Thinking if they ruled that permitting a constitutional right to be unconstitutional, states would be required to follow suit. Does it not work like that? Government is one of those subjects I fell asleep in.

Thanks for the link

I don’t know why the SCOTUS would, “rule(d) that permitting a (C)onstitutional right to be un(C)onstitutional,” although SCOTUS has overruled a number of previous decisions doing exactly that.

But, don’t be too reliant on SCOTUS rulings. They are usually very narrow and rife with caveats which can be exploited.

Let’s say the SCOTUS ruled as unconstitutional the requirement that an individual express and prove a specific need to carry a concealed weapon prior to being issued a license to carry concealed. States would have to follow that and license on a shall issue basis. New York and California followed that ruling, but under SCOTUS’ concept of “sensitive spaces” banned licensed carry in virtually every public spot.

I am thinking of applying for my CCW but I'm afraid my history will get me denied. I have several driving on suspended tickets, a couple of DUI's (years apart so no second while still in trouble for the first) and few failure to appears and a couple misdemeanor controlled substance arrests. These are all 30 plus years old and I've been told as long as I'm honest I'll be OK. That sounds crazy to me. I understand you make your bed you lie in it. Anyone have any kind of record close to this and still get approved?

I didn't have quite that much, no controlled substance arrests but was open about potential previous drug use and have a misdemeanor battery charge from 20 years ago and got approved by Sacramento Sheriff. I got the impression that they do indeed value honesty above all else and there are also very specific things they are looking for regarding potential violent acts happening in recent years. You won't know until you try! But definitely put everything because they will find everything that was ever in a law enforcement database.

It’s not about the things you did when you were stoopid. It’s about what you’ve done since you did those things. Sac IA has always been more interested in whether the trends continued or if you learned from them and re-directed your life. Be honest; be complete as you can be.

I will definitely be very honest, tge problem is I honestly can't remember the details of every interaction that I've had with law enforcement. Can I get my records from somewhere that will show everything they see?

actually I was in the same situation I can't remember exactly when so I put for instance "misdemeanor battery ~2004"
