I’m planning to shoot my first match soon and am looking for others getting started or already competing and willing to share some knowledge.
I stay in Rancho and frequently go to Route 66 shooting sports park.

I’m planning on shooting one of their matches they hold with NRG (Norco Running Gun) on Saturday.
 
What time? I might be able to link up. I’m fairly new myself I’ve shot 2 local matches and Wednesday night steel at prado. I’ve been wanting to do a NRG shoot. It’s always a good time though you’re gonna get hooked. Just focus on safety and having fun. Pay attention to all the shooters from their stage plan and run. You’ll pick up things as the day goes on and other shooters are always willing to help! Good luck dude 🤝

I have a bunch of GSSF paper targets (from when I volunteered as an RO) and 3 stands. Might pick up another 3 so we can set up a stage.
 
I haven't shot any of the competitions but have thought of doing that at some point.

I go to r66ssp almost every Friday to train but only in the afternoons whenever I can get off work early (2pm-3pm). Happy to meet up to train with someone and maybe make that decision to try out NRG.

No time like the present, if you're confident you can be safe, I would say just jump in and have fun
 
I go to R66 one or two Mondays a month in the mornings to train for competitions. I have been competing for almost a year. Let me know if anyone can make out during those days and times.
 
Yeah, I’m always down to link up and train for USPSA. So glad I started doing competitions. It can definitely be a little intimidating at first, but going with people you know makes it a lot easier. I’ve got a bunch of targets and some steel as well as a shot timer.
 
Im gonna hit up r66 tomorrow to check out the match. What time do you get there?
 
Ill be there at 7:30. I like to get there a little early. There is a new shooter meeting at 8am that you have to attend if youve never shot a match there. You should just shoot tomorrows match. Its best to just jump in as long as you feel you can be safe.
 
Went to spectate today. Looked really fun. Nice folks running the event. Will definitely try to shoot it at least once, though everyone says that it gets addictive.
 
I came out and spectated for a bit as well, and it definitely looked like a lot of fun. I was able to ask a few people some questions, and everyone was very friendly and willing to share their experience.


I’d definitely be at a disadvantage with the pistols I currently own since they’ve all been modified (magwell, red dot…etc). Either way, I still plan on shooting a match and getting some experience.
 
I think for me, the value will be in shooting the guns that i carry and in the rig i carry with. So that means no race belt/ race holster/ external mag holders.

Guns will be my carry guns which are mostly stock with red dots.

I see a challenge in that i only have 10rd mags for all my guns, but again, that simulates what I would carry.

I decided to take the intro to competition class at r66 tomorrow.

Shoot with what you have, don't worry about what division it places you. If you're just starting out, it's unlikely you'll be competitive without actually experiencing what it's like.

There's a lot of value to practicing with what you have, especially if you carry. I plan on using my carry one of these next few weekends, and I also would like to check out IDPA at some point (I hear Oh Shoot hosts IDPA at Prado on Sundays)

I have shot with 10 round mags in USPSA before and it requires more stage planning. Here's an old video of me doing this last year:


Don't expect yourself to keep up with people who have higher capacity magazines. You'll do fine, just shoot your skill level and your stage plan.

IMO if wanna make use of your EDC stuff, Carry Optics division or CCP division in IDPA is another alternative to consider later on.

I was told today Appel Valley Gun Club holds matches as well. Bit of a drive but looks like a nice range.
 
Yeah, Lactoast is correct. My first match, I had a comped pistol and I started in open class shooting against the guys in race guns. What’s most important is that you just get your feet wet. How you rank in the beginning is less important the just learning the ropes and gaining experience. When you figure out which division you want to shoot you can then modify or purchase a pistol that fits that divisions rules. Let me know if any of you guys will be shooting next weekends NRG match (5/18), I just registered for it today. We can all try and get on the same squad and shoot it together.
