R700 Action Washer

I recently transferred a pawn shop 700 to an MDT Field stock and initially tried doing so without the spacer washer in the original ADL stock. Without the washer and the action screws torqued properly the bolt was locked in place. The front action screw was binding against one of the bolt lugs.

Tore it down, put the washer back in, blah blah blah and now everything runs fine but I cant help but wonder if it's costing me a little accuracy that way since it's introducing another point of contact (screw-stock-washer-action) - is there any reason I couldn't shave the front screw down and remove the washer entirely? Would it hurt or help things??

that's definitely not going to matter. you don't want it loose in the stock, and you don't want it too tight so that it's putting weird torque on the action. That said, I don't remember using a washer when I had an MDT field stock, did you use the action bolts that came with the stock? I used a Bergara action not a Remington though

Yup, used the MDT screws. Its a 1996 Remington 700 action. Its a profiled washer so it conforms to the actions radius. Googling around says Remington only used it on a few years of the ADL but I cant find a part number for the life of me. It also feels weird that the screw from MDT with the MDT stock is long enough to bind the action lug without it - which makes me concerned the receiver itself might be under typical spec footprint for the action. I'll try to get a picture when I'm home from work tonight.
 
yeah it must be that the action is slightly smaller than spec and it needs the spacer. That's not inherently bad, if it works it works. It could even be good as there will be less contact between the action and the stock.

Shorten the screw so that the washer is not needed.
The person who built the gun with a washer should have done that in the first place.
 
Fair enough. I suppose worst case scenario I can put the washer back in and get a new screw from MDT.
Most places that provide action screws will give you a screw that's too long ON PURPOSE.
That is done so that the builder can shorten the screw to the exact length it needs to be.
The exact length that it needs to be is as long as possible without dragging on the bolt.
You want ever bit of thread engagement you can get and the only way to get that is to start with a screw that's too long.
You can take a single piece of lead shot and stick it to the end of any 700 action screw with a dab of grease and then run that action screw up into the bottom metal/stock/action until it's tight and the lead shot should flatten out.
Now remove the screw and check the thickness of the flattened lead shot.
If the lead shot does not get flattened, you don't have enough thread engagement in a 700 action so you should get longer screws and trim them to the right length.
 
After tearing it down it looks like it very well it's just a washer someone added after the fact. I'd suspect someone did it to shim things on the old stock. Action diameter measures in at 1.360 which seems higher than the 1.35 I thought was spec. Ah well. I'll shave the bolt then.

Was that shim between the action and the stock or between the stock and the bottom metal or pillar or between the screw head and the bottom metal or pillar?
If they had that sitting between the action and stock, it was likely a bedding experiment or a solution to a barrel contact problem.
Was the stock bedded or is the action sitting in a raw stock inlet?

It was between the stock and action. Even with it the original stock wasn't free floated. That stock has since been discarded for an MDT one anyway so that issue is irrelevant now.
Just shortened the screw at my office workshop and will get it in tonight.
