CCW Orange County CCW

I didn’t receive any unprompted email from OCSD until a week before my appointment. I did email the CCW unit a couple times when I had questions and they were very responsive. Was also able to easily change my CCW weapons on my application prior to my interview, which was nice. You should be able to login and check the status of your app, verify that all your info is correct, and upload any docs they’ll need from you.
Thanks. How about rescheduling of your interview appointment? I've heard they set the appointments way out and then start moving them forward. Did your appointment ever get moved up, or did you end up with the appointment you originally scheduled?

My only concern is my CCW class expiring, since it's on March 22/23 and my appointment isn't until 11/13. My CCW instructor says most interview right now are happening within 60 days, but that seems unlikely.

My interview didn't get moved up at all, and I've seen that current apps are being scheduled quite a ways out, like you mentioned. The interviewer said they're working to process everything as quickly as possible but they've had a pretty heavy influx of apps. By the looks of it when I was there, the unit is pretty well staffed, so hopefully they're able to pick up the pace a bit.

Correct. The application does need employer name and address, but no additional documentation, and no more statement of good cause, as I'm sure has been mentioned on these boards. The interviewer let me know she would be calling my references as soon as I left, and actually encouraged me to text them all to give them a heads-up so they wouldn't miss the call. I did get confirmation from all three of my references that they got called very shortly after I texted them and they had to answer a few basic questions: How long have you known him? What is your relationship? Do you believe him to be a stable individual? (or something along those lines), and On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable do you feel around him when he's armed?
Is this a new requirement? I didn’t have to do anything like this for my initial permit.

Welcome to the age of SB 2, effective 1/1/24. Penal Code Section:

26175.

(a) (1) (A) Applications for licenses and applications for amendments to licenses under this chapter shall be uniform throughout the state, upon forms to be prescribed by the Attorney General.[…]
(c) (1) The standard application form for licenses described in subdivision (a) shall require information from the applicant, including, but not limited to, […] the names and contact information of three persons willing to serve as references for the applicant, at least one of whom must be a person described in subdivision (b) of Section 273.5, if applicable, and at least one of whom must be the applicant’s cohabitant, if applicable, and other information sufficient to make a determination of whether the applicant is a disqualified person pursuant to Section 26202.
And, no. This provision was not challenged in the existing lawsuits.

Congrats. 5 months isn't too bad at all considering it took many of us 12 months when Bruen first became law.

I just submitted my renewal request today and hopefully get it in 2 months.
OC also updated how they issue the licenses when you list more than 5 firearms (since there's no limit). Used to be that the first 5 would appear on the license itself, then you would get a printed addendum page listing the remaining firearms. They now list additional firearms on separate CCW addendum cards, with up to 5 on each additional card, so they can be easily carried in your wallet.

Oh so you get a separate card for gun #6-10? Never knew. Thanks for the info.

I only put 5 on it at this time so one card it is.

Correct, separate card for each group of up to 5 guns. Primary card is the actual license that lists all your bio info on it, so must be carried at all times, and the others are labeled "Weapons Addendum" to be carried together with the primary card when necessary.

Just a reminder: no matter how many cards you have listing whatever number of guns, the license can only cover 2 of those guns at any one time. Anything above 2 has to be transported unloaded in a secure, locked container.

Does anyone know the current timeline for new applicants and if I have to have taken the required coursesbefore applying?

The most recent number I heard was 6 months. Your course certificate is good for 6 months, so I wouldn't take it before applying.

I applied in the middle of last month and have my class next weekend.

My interview is currently in mid-November, but according to everyone, it will be moved forward by OCSD.

Has anyone successfully added or removed a gun from the license ? I’m looking to make some adjustments and want to get an idea how long it would take.

I submitted an addition request around 1/20/25 and am still waiting. I am expecting an answer soon as this has now taken almost as long as my renewal did.

I submitted the online forms around March 1 and the earliest appointment date available was January 2026 so there is a 10 month wait.

OC recommends starting your renewal on the 120th day before you license expires! (Can not start any sooner). Also currently adding a pistol is low on the priority due to the system switch back in Nov. the Dept. is still playing catch up in a sense and the priority goes to Initial and renewals as adding a pistol will be looked at you already have something.
