Harbor Freight Braun 1k Lumen Light vs. Streamlight TLR1-HL, X300T, X300U, TLR-7 X Sub, FAKE X300U, GTL II, TLR-6!

I picked one up on a lark the other day. I thoroughly disliked the plastic screw used to tighten down the rail lock, it's definitely a point of future failure. And despite my trying 3 of the 5 included rail keys, no matter how much I torqued down the lock screw, the light had some rattle/movement on my various rails. Maybe I got one that has a tolerance issue. It's brightness, candela, beam pattern and throw match my streamlight tlr-1, at least at the distances I'd use it within my home.

I'm on the fence about keeping it. Leaning towards return and putting that $50 to a new streamlight.

Which light? If you're talking about the Braun, I wonder if they changed things. I have 5 of them and they all have metal allen head screws to retain the rail keys along with a metal nut & washer.

Sorry, yes. The Braun.

My HF has been sold out for months. They finally got a batch. The key retention screws are metal, but the rail lock screw is plastic/polymer. I'm tempted with all the reports of "decent for the money" to exchange it, but I'm sure they're probably sold out again. Maybe I got a bad one (which happens to me a lot with HF stuff), maybe there's been a rush to get them out and the QC is slipping, maybe there's been a change in the production. Or maybe I just expected too much from HF. 😅

That's even more wild! All of mine have metal screws in both places. I'd definitely try to exchange!

I was finally able to snag some of the BRAUN TLR-1 HL Copies and will be making some comparison videos of it versus all the other pistol lights that I currently own, I'll keep this thread updated even though you only have a certain amount of time to edit your posts here.

These tests will be simple, real world type tests. I just went out back after dark to show the difference in light pattern and intensity from about 3 - 25 yards. It's not meant to be the end all, be all type of test, just something to give folks an idea of how the actual light compares to the light of the other WML's

BRAUN vs. Streamlight TLR-1 HL
Thanks for the comparisons

Okay, so there have been some major changes to this light, after being "out of stock" everywhere for a while, the "gen 3" versions have seen major revisions in quality. Down.

One is that no one, no matter what weapon or rail it's mounted on, can get it to mount solidly, so there's rattle no matter what. It also works itself loose after around 500rds. Put too much torque and the (yes, confirmed) plastic rail lock screw, and it will break. The lens bezel is now also knurled heavily, which I'd imagine would be a nightmare to clean after a range trip. There's a giant metallic "BAUER" sticker beneath with all the various sundry warnings HF puts on everything. Multiple reports of the aluminum mounting rail breaking with the shock of shooting, if you've applied too much torque in an attempt to defeat the rattle.

If you've got a first or second gen, chances are you've got a 1-to-1 streamlight without the markings. Good to go.

I would absolutely avoid the "Gen 3" version of this light (sold from very late last year to current), it's crap.

That would mean they have 3 versions. The original had the silver ring on the front bezel, the 2nd version did not. Do you have any photos?

Crazy they would go with a freakin plastic screw! All of mine are metal.

I'm noticing that looking at past reviews on HF's website. So yeah, I'll edit my post above to reflect the "Gen 3" status. Gens 1 and 2 seem like they're very good values. 3 is garbage.

I'll post shoot a few pics tonight and upload tomorrow.

Here's some pics of what I'm calling the "Gen 3" braun weapon light. It was hard to really capture the reflection on the metallic sticker on the underside. The gal who did my return today, upon my explanation as to why, said "Yeah, I've been getting a lot of these back for the same reasons. Too bad...".

Indeed.

Yeah, that's WAY different! Guess maybe Streamlights suit made them change? Which would be crazy because HFT was sued by Snap On and won for one of their jacks that was made in the same factory making the snap on jacks.

I assume they were hit with a C&D order from streamlight and made these material downgrades to keep selling this stuff. But now instead of a solid budget-friendly option, it's now a total piece of 💩 and, in fact, overpriced chinesium garbage.

That really sucks! It was such a monster value to begin with and I didn't even get any from the very first run with the silver ring in the bezel. I don't have any of them on any of my pres any longer, they're essentially just place holders until I get whatever light I want. Still have so many I want to get!

Just ordered the Holosun PID HC (High Candela 42k), would love to check out the Streamlight TLR-1 HP-X & HL-X and would love to find a light that is about flush with the end of a G17 that performs well. Still gotta check out Modlite as well

Indeed. I love my tlr-1, but it a heavy summotherless 🐐 on my CZ SP01. My tlr-7 looks like a toy on it, so the 1 stays for now. I need a new one for my Springfield operator, but my spare cash is being squirreled away for my extras I plan to slap on my eventual echelon purchase. I hear modlights is stupid expensive. So like surefire, I've never really even considered either of them

Really appreciate your efforts in these but would like to see a compilation or a more informative main post rather than scroll thru all the posts
