CHP also didn't know about freedom week magazines. He kept asking about it, saying it was illegal, and why would anyone want more than 10 rounds.
The back up sheriff didn't comment on the mag when he was inspecting my firearm. When CHP mentioned it to sheriff, sheriff said freedom week was a real thing.

Unless he has a reason I’d bring up the situation in Florida where they recklessly disarmed a man for no reason and the dumb b%#t shot an innocent man taking his gun out of the holster. She lost her job and the whole department changed their policy about disarming people at traffic stops and the shot citizen sued the police department and the whole city. It’s dangerous and wreck-less unless there is a reason the person is a threat to disarm them.

JMO, but even if that was the case, if the officer already has reasons to extract you out of your vehicle to disarm you, I don't think explaining what happened in Florida will be any concern of theirs. In fact, I think it'll just aggravate them to probably use a more aggressive approach when disarming you because now, you're just being a smart @ss.

Did you ever file a complaint with the CHP?

I have a relative who is a retired bailiff with OC courthouse and he seemed like he's one of those. I once asked him why he never carry's off duty, he replied with, "I don't want too". He's the type of guy who goes to work, does his job and goes home and forgets why he does what he does. I've never asked him his stance on law abiding citizens with CCW but I can kinda have an idea where he stands.

I’ve had two experiences getting pulled over with a ccw. I started both with “hey officer I just want to let you know I do have a CCW permit and I’m carrying appendix”. Once with chp where I got the “don’t touch yours I won’t touch mine” and sent on my way. The other with Fairfield PD, where I was then handcuffed, put against the police car, had everything removed from my pockets, and then they put me on the curb for 30 minutes while they ran my serial and tried to look through my stuff. I asked if I could at least take the holster off because it digs into my stomach without a firearm and they said no lol. After all that, let me go without any tickets. And because I was on a Harley, they threw my mag and firearm into separate locations of my saddlebags so I was now disarmed after being released from the stop. Funny enough they said “you can go put it together around the corner just not here”. But that seemed like a set up So that being said, my issuing agency does not require me to inform, so I will no longer be volunteering that information to be “nice” if I don’t feel the need to.

No complaint filed by me. Like I said, I think it was that CHP first interaction with someone that had valid CCW. He was friendly afterwards and directed me to his preferred taco spot.

Sorry to hear about your relative. I have one that's retired Navy. He believes no one should own guns, and claims AR stands for "automatic rifle."

Riverside county sheriff was cool though. Don't point at me, I won't point at you.

I completely agree, it def was a jerk move. This all happened a while ago, I'm guessing over more than a decade when obtaining CCWs were tougher. Out of my small friend (8-9 of us) group, we used to hunt a lot and the topic of CCW came up quite often. When Sac county was starting to issue with only "self defense" he applied and was the first in our group to obtain his CCW. I reside in OC and at that time, they made the process more difficult than it was worth. Although, there was a short window when OC only required "self defense" as a good cause but they reverted back quickly. I came close to applying but didn't because of what my friend went through.

I wasn't there to witness what happened and I don't think he'd make the story up just for sh*ts-n-giggles. Now a days, with more agency issuing and possibly more run ins with permit holders, it probably doesn't happen as much (or at all).

Whether anyone wants to believe this or not, it's up to them. Make the best judgement and always follow directions from LEO when given and everything should be ok. Only reason I asked this question was because there was a video I saw few months ago where the individual was removed from his vehicle, the lady officer went to disarm him and sent a round down his leg.

I'll speak for myself. Ancedotal? Yes. Not all LEO are like this. He's the only "bad" experience I've had. I don't blame him though.

I had CHP interaction in Imperial county. I immediately notified officer I was carrying appendix and handed him my DL and CCW card. Officer asked me to turn around with my hands on my head. He took my firearm from my holster to the back of his car, unloaded it, called for back up, then returned to search me.
After he searched me, he asked why I would need a firearm. I told him for protection. He asked why I would need protection: am I involved in anything, or am I with an agency or under cover? I said no.
He was very confused as to why I would want a firearm. He kept asking why I would need a firearm for protection.
At some point, a local sheriff stopped by. He looked at my firearm and asked how I obtained it(365 wasn't on the roster yet).I told sheriff PPT. He said it looks cool with the red dot. He asked CHP if I had CCW. He said yes it ran back clean and firearm serial was clean. Sheriff asked CHP what's the problem then? Everything is clean and legal. No reason to delay or call for back up.
CHP returned my firearm and magazine separate. Told me not to reload it until they are gone.
End story.

If anything, I think it was that CHP first time interacting with someone holding a CCW. As he drove by, he told me about a taco spot he likes to visit if I needed lunch.

I have met multiple people including cop friends that will say something like "yeah you're a PI you definitely need a CCW" like in a pop culture sense in people's minds they think detective and gun makes sense. I personally think the risk is generally only moderately higher than an average person though. If you were with an agency then suddenly in that cop's mind it's normal for you to have a gun.

He was gone for like 20 seconds and said I could be on my way. I have a COE, which is like an "always on" background monitoring... does that make it easier or quicker for them in the background, somehow? Quickest "on your way, citizen" I've ever had.

Your COE # is affiliated with your DL/ID anytime a government agency runs your DL/ID your COE eligibility shows active/expired.

No it's just another field that will populate. DMV and CLETS are their own databases

I'm just surprised not all LEO know how to deal with CCW. One would figure it's mentioned during training at some point. Or maybe they're afraid since most of their interactions with armed individuals are of the negative sort.

Could have been brought up in a liberal/democrat type of household where he was taught guns are evil and only police should have them, who knows.

I drive a lot, so this has happened more than I would like. I just hand the LEO my driver license with my permit under, at the same time. I do let them know whether I’m carrying or not; once they start looking at my permit. If I haven’t told them already, they would ask “…where is it?” I would tell them and then they usually say (not always) “ just don’t reach for it.” All of the interactions have been pleasant and they usually thank me for letting them know. Also, more than 1/2 the time, they just give me a warning for whatever they pulled me over for and send me on my way.

LEO here. Just advise that you are ccw holder and have firearm on you. Advise where it is and you shouldn’t have a problem with most cops. No need to overthink. This is America, it’s your birthright to carry.

Does your system inform you that the person whose information you just ran possesses a CCW permit? I have no duty to inform in my county (Riverside) but I have heard from a couple people in a couple different departments that theirs tells them and that they don't like when you aren't forthcoming with that information, even if it isn't required.

Yes they can see you have a CCW permit.

What if I’m coming from the range and all guns are in my trunk bed but I do not have a CCW permit. If I get pulled over what is the best to cooperate with an officer ?

All firearms must be stored, locked and secure, no magazine in, slide locked back to show clear when not concealed carried. Failure to do this can cause issues if the officer wants to look further into it!

What if your slide doesn't lock to the rear? Or if your firearm doesn't have a slide?

No requirement to lock slide. Only to be unloaded. Trying to find specific PC for transporting firearms...

Do whatever you can to show clear . As long as ammunition is stored separate from your firearm and your firearm is in a locked case, bag , or other forms of storage. You’ll be good. For my rifle I keep a gun lock going through the port and magazine slot. Can do same with a shotgun. This is not legal advice for information purposes only!!
