Flash hider/muzzle break hybrid

Where did you find that? I want one!

As far as I know, springfield only made the long brakes with the flat bottom

I highly recommend that you don't use any type of flash hider in CA unless it's on a Registered Assault Weapon. The window for registering an AW or Bullet Button Assault Weapon is no longer possible. It is not worth the risk. The consequences will be life changing if you are caught. Just get an obnoxious muzzle brake. They are mostly only obnoxious to other people and you can shoot super flat and fast. If you are going for accuracy then this is also better.
I also regret building a 14.5" with a pin and welded brake or flash hider. It is super annoying to change down the road. Trust me...I did it and I will never do it again. If you want accuracy then a longer barrel will be much better. I'd get a 18"-22" barrel from Douglas, Bartlein, Krieger, and Shilen, White Oak Armament, Proof Research, Criterion, etc. I also like the brakes from Surefire. They seem to be less obnoxious.
I would also keep the build simple. I work at a range and see CA crap fail all the time. Just get a fin grip, pin the stock, or get a fixed stock, and get a muzzle brake. Keep it simple so you can learn to clear malfunctions without having to use tools like a mallet. Best of luck to you.

Definitely NOT a fan compensators for anything other than competition, BUT, I shot a BCM Mod 5 comp the other day and loved it! Not sure what wizardry they used on it, but it shot super flat and had none of the obnoxious side percussion. This will definitely go on whatever my next build is. Well done, BCM!

I don't know. I bought the rifle off the consignment rack many years ago. It's all USGI parts except a Smith Enterprises scope mount and the brake. Didn't realize I had a unicorn. I wonder if it is something Smith Enterprises used to make?

I will say this again, not one person has shown this item is not legal in CA.
Just the fact this is even a discussion is insane to me to be honest.
You are not going to get a definitive answer because CA DOJ doesn't make a determination on what is allowed but what isn't allowed. They rely on what the manufacture markets the item as. If i am not mistaken, when BCM started marketing their brakes as having flash hiding abilities there was an uproar and I believe they stopped their marketing to even mention flash.

It's both legal and illegal at the same time. You're just too obtuse to understand that. It's already been explained here. You could put it on a registered AW or perhaps on a mag locked build. But if you put it on a featureless build you've created an illegal AW.

You, making statements like, if they ship it to CA then it is definitely legal, is the problem here. You should know what you're talking about before making statements like that on a gun forum in California.

It's like this: you can legally purchase all of the ingredients to make meth, but the meth that is made from the legal ingredients is illegal. Not complicated in theory, but there are so many intricacies to California gun laws, it's next to impossible to keep things straight.

From the BCM website:

The BCM®™ Compensator Mod 5-5.56
Tuned slots and ports offer compensation of muzzle-rise and flash reduction

I know the OP was looking for something on a P/W, but for those who like the birdcage look, and want to run featureless, these A2-style muzzle breaks are hard to beat @ <$10.00

just be prepared for dumbasses to come up and call it a flash hider anyway even though theres no expansion chamber. if your worried about legality, it looks like a FH. A different design will stop a leo from raising an eyebrow, or you having to explain it in an interview room

OP wants a compmag build anyway, so it dont matter

I like anything that makes it loud and flashy.

(I already have severe tinnitus and some hearing loss from firing 60mm, 81mm, 120mm mortars, M2 Browning, M249 SAW, and M240B many times without adequate ear plugs.)

Good luck everybody else firing near me!

OP is working on a build. So it isn't a RAW or BBAW.
That's not necessarily true. For example, I could have a RAW lower, which is a make/model RAW. I could take the stripped lower, and completely rebuild it from scratch. Same is true with a BBRAW, except I need to leave the bullet button on.

I recommend a Surefire SOCOM 3 or 4 prong flash hider. You can just screw it onto a 16" AR-15 barrel or pin and weld it to a shorter barrel to get it to 16". Since you run a Compmag, you can have all the evil features

You could have that, but the OP didn’t spec it as part of the build.

If you “completely rebuild” a named RAW/BBRAW, I believe you will have manufactured a different, Unregistered AW and committed a few felonies.

Incorrect. A named RAW is defined by the make model, which on an AR is defined by the lower. I can take the RAW and remove everything except the lower and replace it. Because it still has the same make/model/serial, it is the same gun, and the AW registration continues to apply to it, and it is legal. You can even change caliber and barrel length (within reason).

Obviously, certain things are outside that scope, for example making it full auto, adding a silencer, or shortening the barrel to below 16" (because a RAW isn't automatically a SBR). Whether adding a 50BMG upper is legal or not is unclear to me, but those uppers are not available anyway.

For a BBRAW, exactly the same applies. The DoJ has even opined on that, except for one thing: You must NOT remove the bullet button, because that invalidates the BBRAW registration. But you can remove and replace the parts kit, stock, grip, and upper (again, not to SBR etc.).

Loud? Get a tank brake for that AR. Great brake at mitigating recoil but those around you will hate you! 🤣
