Banned for CCW: 1911, Weapon Lights, Red Dots, Lasers, limit 2 Weapons per person

Just applied for my CCW and after reading through the policies, I feel like the only place I’m allowed to carry is in my home in my tighty whities. Everywhere else is banned from carry essentially. I don’t understand how they can restrict people like that
Because this is California, the one party anti constitutional state. Given ultimate power all guns would be illegal here except law enforcement and politician's personnel security details.

Maybe another lawsuit will cover this in 10 or 15 more years. By then dozens of new restrictive gun laws will be passed here to replace any overturned.

It's like sweeping back the ocean with a broom. Don't count on our resistive supreme court to clarify the rulings they already made.

Irish democracy.

I have my permit in CoCoCounty and have p365 and G19 on my permit. Both totally stock except for trijicon HD's. Im not a red dot guy anyway, but after carrying for a couple years now I gotta say smaller is better. Trying to stuff a bare glock 19 in your waistband all day is hard enough, add a weapon light and red dot and its gonna be even more uncomfortable
I would say this is not true. I’ve got dots on my P365XL and the P-01 I carry. Doesn’t make it less comfortable. I find the G19 as comfortable as the P365XL. The issue is probably your holster and belt set up vs the pistol. I’m a small man , yet comfortably carry an alloy /steel P-01 that weighs 34 oz loaded. It took me 3 holsters and 3 belts to figure out.

After competing USPSA from concealment with my EDC set up and regular clothes and taking defensive shooting classes , my P365 was cumbersome . Changing it to an XL was a huge improvement, but it still lags behind the P-01 in ease of use and speed , especially shooting on the move and target transitions… in my hands. The G19 is also easier to shoot than the 365 XL.

You sacrifice comfort for shoot ability.

I was fine with irons until I took a class and shot 2 matches in the pouring rain on really dark days. I could not see my fiber optic front sight through my wet glasses. This could easily happen in a self defense scenario. I switched to an enclosed dot. No issues in the rain, much faster to transition and shoot on the move with single plane focus.

I’m a mediocre shooter but put my ccw set up to the test because my life may depend on it.

At least their range qual. standard is extremely easy compared to other counties.

Plus, some of their cities (like Concord PD) have historically processed CCW in record time (I heard 30 days from start to finish?)...
As a gun owner why would you want easier qualifications as far as marksmanship?

You'd have to ask the CoCo county SO - they only ask for 18 shots, at 5, 7, and 10 yards. But - it's a point system (more points if center hit, less points the outer the shot is but still within silhouette). If I'm not mistaken, there's no need to draw from holster or start at low-ready. I say it's easy, because I've seen new gun owners (with minimal weapons familiarity or range familiarity) in my CCW classes pass this test. The only downside; head shots are DQ (per CoCo SO).

My county (SF) is 25 shots, at 5, 7, and 15, both draw from holster and low-ready.

I would absolutely advocate for any CCW permit holder/pursuer to be highly qualified in terms of marksmanship. Last thing I would want is a green CCW holder without target discipline to start blasting off shots and hitting an innocent bystander, rather than the assailant.

For CoCo quali, we needed to draw from holster, from the 3 o’ clock position, for all three positions; none were from low ready. We were allowed hand on the pistol grip if we wanted to; but I chose to start with my hands high like if I was shooting at steel practice/challenge.

Where did you hear that coco doesn’t shoot from holster or even low ready; and also headshots is a DQ? Someone from a class? We definitely don’t shoot from low ready at quali but we do shoot from holster.

The group of 6 that I was qualifying with, all passed, scored minimum of 160-ish and up out of the total of 180? Guy next to me had a flyer, was being hard on himself, I just told him; “it’s alright, just stop doing it, it’s only minus ten points so far.” Kind of the saying “just let it go” when missing the bird when shooting trap or skeet; being frustrated just makes it worse.

I don’t remember a headshot being a DQ for us. I remember reading before quali that per headshot or flyer is minus ten points out of the total of 180 points, with 126 being a passing score.

However I’ve read in the forums that others have experienced certain folks who had issues safety handling, lack of competency of new fiearm, or issues with staying on target with their micro sub-compact firearms.

Easy? They are the only Bay Area county that I know of where the qualification is timed. My instructor said it’s the most realistic. But yeah, two weapons is a bummer.

My mistake; my initial CCW class (shortly after Bruen) had a few CoCo county guys in it - the instructor didn't mandate holster draw for those guys. I thought it was weird...

I believe he got CoCo county mixed up with my county (SF) - I landed one head shot and he DQ'ed that firearm. I challenged this with my IA and they told me headshots should have counted so long as my shots were within the silhouette.

SF and Santa Clara county is timed as well.

I only looked up SF. 5 rounds in 20 seconds? That’s a joke. Contra Costa is 6 rounds in 5 seconds at the same distance. I will grant that it’s much easier to get to that point - no psych evaluation and no character references. I don’t remember doing the interview. Either I didn’t or it was not memorable. Appears we may be crazy but better shots! 🤣

Alameda County is also timed and requires 50 rounds with distances to 25 yards.

I did the Contra Costa qualification. I was well-practiced, so it was easy. Someone did fail on one of their two guns. I have a feeling the sheriff doing the timing let the shooters go longer than 5 seconds at 5 yards.

I would like the qualification to be a bit harder. I'd like people who carry to be forced to train a bit. From observing the group before mine and talking to others in my group, many people who passed would have a hard time using their weapon successfully in a self-defense situation.

I somewhat agree with their limitation on pistol modification after you've qualified with it. But, I disagree with the limitation of no modifications at all from the configuration on the roster. I would very much like to use a red dot, and would be a safer shooter with one because of my older eyes; it's hard to focus close in on the sites.

It would be nice to be able to remove the magazine disconnect. I wonder if they would make an exception for removing the magazine disconnect because it can technically handicap us even though technically they can say it’s messing with the safety mechanism. That’s why I’ve stuck with carrying Gen 3 Glocks so far that I bought back then on calguns. Have thought about the on roster guns such as sig p365 x-macro or the s&w metal 2.0; but then thought about maybe just buying the off roster version instead because it’s the magazine disconnect that annoys me, I can deal with the LCI but do not prefer the magazine disconnect.

I’ve read a policy for a different county that doesn’t allow modifications to the firearm, but does allow red dots, but requires that the slide be cut from the factory; which means permittees can’t send slides that havnt been cut to third parties such as Jagerwerks. If the optic cut is cut from a reputable source it shouldn’t be a problem regarding tolerances and reliability.

Contra Costa is not issuing permits for residents of some cities. Brentwood being one of those. If you live here your gun has to currently be on the DOJ roster. Which means you may have to purchase a new weapon every two years if your current one's manufacturer chooses not to pay the annul extortion imposed by the Ca DOJ.

Head shot is not a DQ but counts as a miss, at least when I did a pistol change on my permit last month. The guy next to me had a flyer to the head. He was concerned it would DQ him but it didn't.

What?Brentwood has it listed in their policy that it handguns on the ccw permit must be on the California roster?

Oh shyza, you’re right. They wrote it as “must be on the doj approved handgun list”. Man, their issuance fee is expensive; so is their renewal. Their application fee isn’t that bad though for $150. Looking at these fees, applying through contra costa county isn’t that bad then; $80 for app fee, $80 for issuance.
