I thought about shaving the inside of the magwell and matching it to the same thing and dimension of my M85. It seems like I just need to grind a bit of the back of the well in front of the mag latch. And polish where the mag lug rides up the mag latch lever.

Tight lower side rails will usually spread out to let a mag slide in.
A mag will NOT slide in when the rear of the magwell is sticking forward even a little tiny bit too far.
Check your magazine fit carefully to actually identify exactly what is too tight before you start grinding/filing.

Never start by modifying mags when a gun will not accept them.
The first thing to figure out is if it's a specific single mag that does not fit while all other mags fit fine or if it's a gun problem because many mags will not fit.
You fit the gun to take the vast majority of your mags and then you fit a couple stray mags to also get them to fit the gun.

If you fit a bunch of mags to a tight gun, they will then be loose in a properly dimensioned gun and you have ruined those mags for use on properly dimensioned guns as they will only properly fit the too-tight gun you fitted them to...

It’s my only 5.56 ak; so I didn’t have another gun to fit.

For 7.62x39, I’ve had mags that I modified to fit a specific gun, that originally fit a different gun just fine, but when putting using the mag in the gun that it originally fit and shoots fine, it was just a little loose but continued to cycle just fine.
I’ve also had tight fitting mags not cycle, and didn’t cycle after filing to fit better; that cycle fine in another gun.

I'm glad that doing things the wrong way has worked out "OK" for you.
Loose fitting mags are not a desirable trait in AK's.

I wouldn’t file to fit any expensive or harder to find/not as easily replaceable import ban mags (I.e. Russian or chi-com)
