Yep, An AR would be the right tool for this job

Another one in Milpitas.

Looks like the same group of model citizens that raided the one 20min away in San Jose. Notably, with the same weapons in hand.

But this time owner fires back, producing a different result, and possibly making these "gentlemen" think twice about a engaging in these wholesome activities again.

ironically to the whole discussion, when it happened in Milpenis it took literally one shot and the group ran away.

Sure, the store staff having a few ARs with 30-round magazines would have turned a robbery into a prolonged gun battle with probably a few dead people. And that's progress how?
If 15 Masked men enter my store with weapons I would expect to die. Any response is better than that.

We don't know in advance what is needed. Better to have it and not need it than the opposite.
I know I just think it's funny. I carry at least one extra magazine with my ccw.

On the contrary. If 15 masked men with weapons enter my store, and have the intent to rob the store, I expect to survive uninjured. Because the robbers know exactly that theft is a minor crime, with mild punishment, and LE won't put terribly much effort into solving the crime. While murder will put them away for decades, and in a highly publicized case, there will be pressure to "catch them".

Related anecdote: A few years ago, a friend's office had a whole lot of copper cable stolen. The thieves cut the cable carefully, and used electrical tape to insulate the places where they had cut. The investigating LE told my friend exactly why: theft of cable is a minor crime; arson is a serious crime. Criminals are not stupid.

Not intent to murder, until they shove you, fall down, hit your head on the corner of the counter. The 88 yrs owner had a stroke due to the robbery, it could mean he may have lost some of his motor functions and will end up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, bodily harm.

When someone backs a car crashing into my store, then a mob starts to pour in, I will be in fear of my life and bodily harm. Appropriate action would be unloading 8 x 00 buck into the mob, draw side arm and fire while retreat into the backroom and call 911.

The shotgun with 00 is certainly the way to go in this type of situation, if the 88 year old can even handle a weapon. In hindsight, it would've been wise to install barriers / concrete and steel bollards outside, in front of the store to prevent vehicles from crashing into the store. All retail establishments with very high value merchandise on display should do this.

Wow. F-ing wow. I don't even know what to say to that.

If he is 88 years old, maybe a featureless 16 inch 9mm AR-9, with a compensator, lightweight handguard, red dot that is comfortable for his eye sight, and a freedom week stick would be more comfortable and practical; considering his age or any health conditions/risks.

At 0:32 and 0:40 kinda looks like a glock, extended magazine? Same person, same tool in right hand, and the tool is used in a way unlike a hammer.

At 40 seconds into the video one points what appears to be a pistol at one of the workers.

One or more of these guys was carrying a gun. I agree that having an AR would be a wise choice, but so too would be a defensible position.

Tactics matter.
Take position behind the counter facing the door, and open fire as they come in. There was plenty of time to grab a gun at the ready. The first couple will go down, the rest will scatter like roaches.

My thoughts about aiming for the legs is more one of personal morality than legality. If I can defuse any situation without taking more human lives, that would be my choice.

As for the shotgun, that is the close quarters weapon of choice for me. In a situation like the video, when you miss with a 5.56 round and, you will miss with some rounds in the heat of the moment, those rounds can penetrate so much more and travel so much further than 00 buck. With my luck, I'd end up hitting some child or other innocent bystander and I wouldn't be able to live with that.
I appreciate the sentiment for human life, but these people will beat you down, then stomp your head in the ground, leaving you drooling and crapping in a diaper for the rest of your life, and laugh about it with their friends later. They are not coming by for a welfare check. Center mass.

12 ga. with 00 buck would have severely injured or killed some and sent the rest of those perps running for the hills. Problem is, you not only need the weapon but the situational awareness to pick it up and use it. The old fellow without a shirt seemed more like a deer in headlights, simply shocked and stunned by what was happening. A lot of people in his situation would have reacted the same way, hell I'm not sure how fast I would have reacted, it was over in seconds.

After you've intentionally killed people, be it in the military or some other "legal" situation many of us start wondering if it was worth it. For me, it was always an us or them situation, it was never to protect "stuff". I'm not sure "stuff", especially if it's insured, is enough moral justification to kill. I wouldn't have a problem shooting at their legs with a shotgun or aiming to kill if they were coming at me or other innocents with weapons.

Some people will say the old guy should have been wearing a weapon, the problem with that is, in most retail businesses other than gun stores, employees wearing weapons is bad for business. Most retail customers feel intimidated by that.
You’re not shooting to kill anyone, you’re shooting to stop the threat, period. Morally and legally you are in the right.

Never aim at legs, arms, etc. If you did not feel the threat was justified to shoot center mass (As LEO’s, Military, CCW Test requires, then you are not justified to be shooting at limbs; which is hilarious because you can hit a vein and bleed out anyways, especially with 00 buck as you have nine chances per shot fired to hit something vital.

So you know what 15 armed, violent perps are thinking? Only one of them has to lose their cool for this scenario to go bad.
