The first big storm of the winter season is due to arrive this Tuesday afternoon for those of us in far Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Winter storm prep always starts with watching the weather reports through the season so I know what’s coming ahead of time. With this storm bringing flood warnings and high wind warnings, it’s sure to be an interesting one.
Pre-storm prep for my rural property includes checking the rain gutters around the roofline to be sure those are clear of leaves. Next comes the drainages beside my long, country driveway to be sure they’re clear and ready for runoff. After that, I’ll check the chainsaws and make sure they’re gassed up and that I’ve got plenty of extra fuel and bar oil in case any trees come down along the driveway. Last, I’ll fill the wood rack next to the house so I can keep the wood stove going without having to make a trip through the rain and wind to the woodshed.
I’m on high ground with good drainage so flooding will not be an issue. On the other hand, I’m on a high ridge so big winds in the forecast are not to be taken lightly.
Looks like I’ll be hunkered down on Tuesday and just enjoy the show. After the storm passes, I’ll venture out to see what needs to be put back in order.
Wish me luck!
