Damn that's sad. I guess if he was able to discharge the spray then maybe he could have shot it. What a brutal way to go. RIP.
I think with some bears, spray works. With others, its just hot sauce for their food. Dude emptied the can on the bear but it was hell bent on killing him.

he was hiking alone in low light and likely startled the bear which means he wasn't making noise. 3 major things he neglected that could have prevented this.

I actually went for a jog in Glacier park when I was around 19, visiting with my dad. I saw a cub next to the trail on my way back and ran my ass off to get out of there! Never saw mama fortunately.

Everyone knows if your spray won’t work you have to close the distance with the bear, shove the whole can in his mouth, then get him to bite down on it in order to puncture the can with his teeth. It’s the only obvious choice.
