What is a compliant AR build today?

Thanks for the great info everyone!

In summary

Option A: Go featureless (with fin grip/paddle grip) and regular mag release with 10 round mags.
A featureless rifle (in California) is one that does not have any of the following:

  • pistol grip
  • thumbhole stock
  • telescoping/folding stock
  • flash hider
  • grenade or flare launcher
  • forward pistol grip
A featureless rifle allows the use of detachable magazines and lawfully owned standard-capacity magazines.

Option B: (disassembly to swap mags), but with pistol grip
  • AR Maglock, Juggernaut Tactical Hellfighter, Comp Mag

Question 1:
If I have legally acquired +10 magazines, are they acceptable to use in the Option B version?

Question 2:
If I did register my BB AR under the AB1135/SB880 window, dose this change my options? Can I go back to a regular mag release on this AR, or stay with the BB?

Let's just say everything in the safe has been disassembled until I am right with California Gun Jesus. Some things I know there is no easy path forward, and they have been promoted to De-Milled and recycled. :(

You already answered question 1 with your summary of a featureless rifle. The answer is no, you cannot use +10 mags with a fixed mag gun.

For question 2, if you have a BBRAW my understanding is you have to leave the BB on. You cannot install a standard mag release. I think CA considers BBRAWs another type/class of RAW. This topic is somewhat up for debate, with some people saying you can install a standard mag release. It's not clear, and I don't think this has been tested in court. But I think you can take the parts off of it and use them on another lower for a featureless build. For example, leave the BBRAW lower alone and make the upper featureless and use it on a featureless lower.

There was a drug dealer/fraud criminal bust recently in CA. The person had CA compliant ARs, and the LE and such considered it Assault Weapons/Rifles.

CA compliancy is dead if they think CA compliant ARs are still Assault Weapons/Rifles, just a thought.20260222_175036.webp

Eeeh does it matter if some IG account (or even a “reputable” news outlet) uses the AW term? Did the guy get charged with having unregistered AWs? Media always says AW if a rifle is vaguely black colored… doesn’t mean the law no longer exists.

The LEO Captain told the media outlet you quoted that the guns were legally owned based on a quick google search. Do you have different information or is this just fearmongering?

Fear mongering are those that stay compliant.

Fear mongering are those that stay compliant.
Dude what? You claimed CA law enforcement considers legal configurations of ARs to be Illegal and then implied people shouldn’t bother complying with gun regulations which will either result in more people getting actually charged with something for not being compliant or scare people away from owning ARs altogether. I just pointed out that your example was inaccurate and the LEO in that story said the guns were legally owned. That dude got busted for drug dealing not his ARs. Your post was fearmongering as is the news article title.

I can see you’re not a rational person; I’m going to stop engaging so folks can use this thread for its intended purpose - to ensure they keep their ARs legal so they don’t end up in jail or lose all their gun rights.

I suggest if you’re not compliant that you keep that information off a public forum…

My rifle has a none-detachable single shot bob-sled.

The bob-sled holds the bolt open after the shot and to reload you kerplunk another round in the from the right side, slap the left side paddle to get it into the chamber, fire and repeat.

For shooting from the bench, it’s the most zen way to shoot. Try it!

you can have your bullet button if the long gun was registered as an AW however it was a short window to do such thing
OP asked:
However, what is the current legal compliant build formats for an AR?
I answered as if he were building today.
Today does not include 2018 and the OP did not say he had AW registered his bullet button guns so I did not tell him about that.
How come you left out the 1989 and 2001 registrations?
Do you consider those as today too?

You can keep the bullet button and use large capacity magazines on an AW you registered in 2018.
There is no law prohibiting switching to a standard magazine release.
There is a regulation relating to the registration process that says you can not remove the bullet button but that regulation is only in relation to the registration process so it should have no legal teeth after the registration is completed as it has no actual law supporting it after the registration process is complete.

All hearsay. I asked if you stay compliant? Not a hard question to answer.

As you assume what I do, you must be a snitch type of person.
