Open Gear Question What 10 mm do you use for a side arm when hunting?

I’m looking to get my hunting site on and I wanna get a 10 mm but I truly do not know what to get in California. Any advice or recommendations with pictures would be appreciated.

We don't have dangerous wildlife in the Ca Backcountry. But if you insist, there's only 3 on the roster, 2m&ps and a kimber. But Ive raised cows and sheep on public lands, been backpacking for 40 years multiple times a year, hunting for the last 10 years and never even heard of a close call with wildlife. I see bears all the time, when you are in areas with hunting pressure they won't even let you get close.

+1 for not much dangerous wildlife in backcountry. Rattlesnakes are probably your biggest hazard.

Brown bears keep to themselves.

That being said I carry a 10mm M&p 4.6” with a 24lb spring

A 10mm handgun in CA isn't really needed but I will always carry one now. Few years ago I had a very close, abrupt encounter that only a pistol at such a close distance could've been drawn and used. Everything happened so fast, there was no way I could've swung my 26" browning rifle that I had slung on my shoulder fast enough to stop a charging, spooked and scared 200# hog. Glad that 10mm was holstered to my side or else I would've been hurt or possibly rolling down that 10' ravine full of thorn bushes. After unloading what I thought at that very moment was a full mag (only 5-6 was shot with my heart pumping outta my chest), that hog dropped literally less than a foot in front of me.

If you could find a used glock, go with a glock20. I have a 29 but replaced it with the 20 as it was too short to get a good purchase on the grip. Granted the 20 is a thick, blocky sucka, I still use it. I hand load and been wanting to try some cutting edge all solid copper 190gr projectiles that they offer.

It's California; grizzlies are extinct, brown bears keep to themselves, mountain lions also keep to themselves plus shooting one is probably going to get you embroiled with fish and wildlife. Your Alaska trip is a hypothetical. It kinda sounds like you're really reaching for a use case to justify buying a gun you want. You don't have to do that, you can just buy the gun that makes you happy if you have the money. Its okay! that being said ppt a glock 20

Yes, Glock 20 was the choice when it was on roster. If the glock 10mm is good enough for the Sirius Rangers, it its good enough for you. I shot a rental before...it was nice.

If I were looking for something new I'd look at the new M&P. For used, the Glock 29 can double as a carry gun where the 20 is too large to EDC IMO.

no one forgot, this is a California forum and if someone says they are starting out hunting they may still be under the impression that the woods here are full of scary animals that you need protection from. In most circumstances in Ca, hunting is going to involve a lot of hiking so saving 2-3lbs is significant and it's also going to just be a better experience if your paranoia remains low. There's only Grizz in 4 states so if someone wants information on those states they should be specific.

Although I will probably never use it again, I have no plans on selling it. I did have it posted FS last year but took it off due to it being discontinued and no longer being made.

Why do people assume the only way in California to aquire a handgun is if it's on the roster?

If you want a 10mm and want to enjoy shooting it, go find a ppt S&W 1006.
