Thread protector replacement on a S&W Response 9mm carbine

I'm looking to get rid of that ugly thread protector on my S&W Response.

Checked out the Odin Works Atlas 9mm. What have you used or what are my options?

What method are you using to make that gun legal?
If you have it setup featureless, then you can use any muzzle brake that you want.
You can not use a flash suppressor on a featureless build.

If you have it setup as a fixed magazine, you can use any muzzle device that you want.

There is a difference between a muzzle brake and a comp but both are fine as long as they are NOT also flash suppressors.
The main thing you need to be concerned with is if the manufacturer advertises them to have flash suppressing properties.
Any muzzle device advertised as having flash suppressing or hiding properties is a flash suppressor in CA even if it does not actually suppress flash well.

I’m buying a SW response this week and I’m trying to add a pistol grip and get rid of the fin, but I’m having difficulty finding parts for making it featureless.

Odin works atlas 9mm will work since it’s 1/2x28 thread pitch. I feel like it has more of a competition size/style look to it.

Any 1/2x28 thread pitch muzzle brake with a bore size that fits 9mm will work. Just don’t order one for 5.56 that is 1/2x28. It will say that it is for 9mm in the description or name; usually. Jmac customs has different thread pitches but their bore size is 10mm for everyone; unless it’s stated as for 9mm specifically.

It all comes down to what aesthetics, specs, and performance that you are looking for to compliment your set up/load out and its usage/use case.

I don’t have the s&w response but for 9mm brake for aero epc 9mm 16 inch I went with cmt tactical 9mm combat mini brake. I was looking at the specs and felt like that best suits my needs for defense/action range pcc. I also liked that it didn’t add more to the length.

That atlas from Odin works looks nice since it has the adjustable but for me I feel like it’s a little long but the adjustable portion is nice.

Aero precision has that 9mm gamma brake too that will fit because of the thread pitch of 1/2x28; but I like how the cmt tactical ports at the top vent at an angle instead of directly up like the gamma 9mm brake.

I have also used the jmac 2c 9mm brake which is 1/2x28 but it has a notch at the top since it’s originally meant for AK’s in 9mm but they show pictures of it installs on AR-9 too with a crush washer.

The looks is more of competition look with a smaller size which compliments a Vityaz look. The 4c is good if you don’t mind a longer look and more ports.

You could also go with a fortis manufacturing 9mm brake too for a more aggressive look. I’ve only tried their 5.56 1/2x28 and 5/8x24 .30 cal brake/locking lug blast deflector combo.

Gen 1 is good for if your muzzle device crush washer area is past the handguard as you need access to the latch for quick detach the blast deflector from the lugs.

Gen 2 is good for if your crush washer area is recessed into handguard, since you can just twist the blast deflector anywhere to unlock/lock it from/to the lugs. The gen 2 brake and blast deflector also has a more aggressive look to it; I call it the dragon look. They make it in black nitride or case hardened.

Here is gen 2 combo on a .308 12.5 inch pistol upper build; case hardened treatment.

If you wanted more weight in the front end you could even go with something like this since it’s 1/2x28. It’s originally meant for the old steel model MPA defender 930 (mini Mac pistol); but based on thread pitch and bore size it’ll fit. It’s a barrel extension that serves as a weight but looks like a fake can; would look bad ass with a can cover like the one from Odin works or burn proof. They don’t use crush washers on the pistols; just hand grip tight.

It takes ar-15 pistol grips doesn’t it? It’s just s&w’s version of a AR-9; isn’t it?

You could go with the featureless grips that actually let you get a grip such as sparrow dynamics or resurgent arms for polymer. Juggernaut tactical looks like a flaccid pee pee but it’s made of aluminum; $80 vs the polymer options which are about half the price.

Some people like the b5 featureless for a fin grip for actual fin style because it comes with a thumb ledge.

My favorite ar15 muzzle brake is the j comp gen 2, it definitely cuts muzzle rise but it's not too concussive and you can throw the SI oppressor on if you want to shoot indoors.its also cheap and looks ok

What aftermarket parts were you leaning towards?

Based on pics, besides the mag release, most parts seem interchangeable with AR-15/AR-9 parts. The lower receiver looks like it’s a little different in shape around the buffer tube area. The set up just looks like smith and wessons response to the AR-9 9mm 16 inch pcc market.

It would be nice if they made an extended mag release for that set up like how Odin works makes one for the AR-9 Glock mag set ups. I noticed extended mag releases come in handy for featureless set ups for AR-15 and AR-9 for the reach when using featureless grips that actually let you get a grip compared to fin grips since they bring the hand position up and back further like the traditional Monte Carlo style grip like a traditional hunting stock.

A pistol grip is a feature so you would need to go fixed magazine in order to have a pistol grip.

Wait, after reading this again, wouldn't getting rid of the fin grip make it fixed mag?

I'm not looking to add anything at the moment. So far I've only added a linear comp, Holosun green dot with a riser and a handful of Glock mags. I am curious and want to try a Sparrow grip.

The CA legal version of this gun is sold in featureless configuration with a fin grip.
Switching to a standard pistol grip is adding a feature.
In order to have a feature and remain legal, the magazine needs to be fixed.
