Stock Market & Economy is getting wrecked

I wouldn't be discouraged in the market @ikeo1. When covid hit that's when I experienced the worst crash and was down 75% and thought i was done for. But I took advice from an old investor who told me that's the best time to buy and reinvest and I'm glad I did... probably put all my savings and a ton of money at the time and I rebounded over a fewer years if not tripled or quadrupled my portfolio up until now. I'm down about 15k which isn't bad but I'm about to rebuy and reinvest even more then last time with this drop. Gl

I’m not discouraged, I also agree it’s an opportunity if you can take advantage of it and it’s in your favor. Just saying for most people it’s gonna be rough. I can weather this storm and it seems like a number of you can, which is good to hear. Seems like this group is better prepared than most.

I'm down 92% overall (All the way back from EV hype) but see this market as opportunity. Time to get back on investing soon!

Buy the dip and dca. Yes it's down on the 1mo and the 3mo but overall ony my 1yr I'm still up roughly 18%. For me PLTR stung the most, maybe should have taken profits above $100 but I'm still ok avg cost per share is still 29.80.

Stay healthy and keep investing. Live long enough for time in the market to be real. Eat healthy, lift weights, do cardio, keep your brain right and just outlive any crashes or downturns that may happen.

That's one strategy, mine have all been in growth stocks and were up 50-300% in the last 2 years. If you're not getting hit, it means your not in high yield investments which you mentioned. Cashing out some now isn't too bad I sold tesla at $410 it's $226 now. So it depends on your portfolio. I bought at $150. If you have a strategy, you're ahead of the game, but the majority of Americans don't have that type of education.

This reinforces, that it helps the haves vs the have nots and continues to build wealth inequality or do you think this is an opportunity for people to jump into a higher economic class? It can be if they prepared, but is it most people or a fraction of them?
The information is out there and the ability to learn has never been so front and center and available to the masses as it is today. If people refuse to take the time to learn how to manage their money, it is completely their own fault. "But I wasn't given that education" is bull💩. It's available, for free, with the smartphone in every American's hand. 7 year old kids have more availability and opportunity to learn than any other generation in the history of the world. If young adults today make the choice to remain ignorant, that's on them.

I received zero education about money or spending throughout my life until my late 20s. I decided I didn't want to be broke anymore and spent a lot of time and effort and late nights reading and learning. I'm no longer broke and barring some pretty damned unlikely events, it's unlikely I ever will be either.

Best best is to keep your resume and skills updated. And be likeable to your bosses.
Never stop improving your own value. Learn new skills, acquire new certifications, make new friends, network. Always. A huge number of people just trudge through daily life not doing a single thing to better themselves or make themselves more marketable and when they realize that they've become obsolete, they blame everyone and everything besides themselves.

Project 2025 states clearly that they want to consolidate power with the president, that's why they are gutting federal agencies and their biggest target is the Federal Reserve. They want to return to the gold standard which is would mean that countries would buy and sell gold or other commodities to stabilize the value of their currency. It wouldn't even work if we were the only ones doing it, so again it comes down to the stated goal of consolidating power with the president. In project 2025 documents they blame regulation for the financial crises of the past 40 years in 2008 and 1988, ignoring the fact that both of those crises were on the tail end of deregulation that ironically started with Democrat presidents Carter and Clinton but ended with 8 years of GOP power. But regardless, the stated goal of project 2025 is to consolidate power with the president, and if you think that any president we have ever had should ever have that much power then I would look to the religious monarchies in the middle east and how well the common man is treated there. None of this is for "the people" it's for the ruling class to consolidate power and decrease democracy.

As things have softened, OIL is down a good bit ($66ish/bbl)... EVERYTHING is either made from oil, needs oil to run, or oil to transport, or all of those! The "green new steal" created devastating inflation pressures, that energy shift is going to take some time to adjust, and should start to show up in the inflation numbers shortly, along with the overly cautious Fed keeping interest rates high (and those need to come down to reduce interest on the national debt that every man, woman, and child in America "owes" somewhere over 100K...

It's going to take some time to adjust, and even with the current "fire sale", "the sky is falling", end of the world vibe currently providing lots of evidence that the markets DO NOT like "uncertainty"... the sun will come up tomorrow, and one day soon solid investments will rise again. All of the "big names" are not going anywhere, and are highlly unlikely to be savaged by "pilfered" AI tech from China (although AI itself is another highly over-hyped "tech", IMO).

My personal theory is that this drop is AI algorithm driven, and it will continue to "feed" on itself as a result of how AI driven trading usually works. Think of it this way, the "system" is glitching, that won't last forever, keep your powder dry and wait for sanity to return, be prepared to buy good stocks at significant discounts to what they sold for just a month ago (some are off 30-50%!). Pick a few good ones and watch and wait. If you're into options, hedge whatever is in your portfolio, play both "sides" of the markets like the big boys do.

I look at things in 2 and 5 year windows to get context around shifts like we have seen the last month or 2. Realistically the market has returned where it was around Nov last year. Retail investors do not realistically move the market, so it is the institutions that are shifting with all this talk about recessions. Guess we will have a better idea by this summer of where things are shifting.

Half the advice in here reads like people have been in an up only economy for two decades and have never heard the phrase don't catch a falling knife. Most people seem to apply value investing observations like "stocks are discounted from months ago" without any consideration for PE's which is the definition of insanity. There's a reason Buffet is 100% in Cash right now.

Perhaps if your investment thesis is that things are going to suddenly start going up try to articulate what sudden new growth is going to cause that to occur?

The reality is valuations haven't been sane since 2018, inflation is sticky because we printed 6 trillion dollars and set it on fire during covid, and we just had 6 months of some of the best earning jobs in the country getting absolutely decimated topped off by one of our most secure employers suddenly laying off a vast amount of its workforce. I think calling valuations sane back in 2018 is extremely forgiving as well.

We are now entering Curtis Yarvin's america.

Techno feudalism's american dream doesn't involve a middle class. Gonna take a lot of trump fans and liberals a while to wrap their head around where this is all going.

Most people who do not work in FAANGs or big tech cos don't seem to have wrapped their heads around what they elected they still think they voted for Trump and some sort of revitalization of the American dream.

Chamath literally just said the MAG7 should land somewhere in the trillions of value lost.

Oh, the incremental creep. I thought this site didn't want off topic and political posts 🤔

This is a current event and people can choose to opt out in their preferences. Also, this isn't so much a political post as much as it is a huge change in the economy. The main thing is to discuss the action and results vs. this party, hunter biden, george soros, Pelosi, TDS, etc. As long as it stays on topic relevancy its open to people.

This runs once an hour and this will disappear for people who aren't interested in these topics. As long as we can have old school discourse vs. the modern iteration we're good.

We don't want the OT and Political posts of CGN. That can stay there. However, if we can talk about things to better our lives, its open. How to make money or protect your money during political uncertainty is beneficial for this kind of community. Preparedness goes just beyond physical, it also includes financial since financial SHTF is way more common than SHTF .

I really don't care one way or another. I just think it's funny that the political posts against the Trump administration are accepted as allowed discussion disguised as talk about the stock market. When you (Ikeo ) started this site you made it clear you didn't want an OT section. I find it humorous that I see posts leaning further and further toward OT. Incremental creep. That's all.

4 trillion dollars in value were erased from the market in a single day due almost entirely to INTENTIONAL actions of the "current administration".

Seems a bit extreme to imagine a world in which people aren't going to talk about it. Not exactly a routine event.

If you didn't, you wouldn't have commented. I think you're mistaking the comments on Calguns with my own. I said similar things with Biden/Newsom. It's only when it's Newscum or some irrelevant tangent exactly like you're bringing up now.

It's not about being against any administration as much as the IMPACT of administration on us. You should look at the other posts for the origin of the Current Events & Casual Corner forums. Perhaps you don't know why they're created or when.

Also if you noticed there's a big revamp of the site. I'm not sure when the last time you were here, but things change quite a bit and fast here. I will say political talk like that on CGN is absolutely not for here, it can stay there. It's less about the politics as much as the lack of decorum and discourse. A year later, I'm proud of how the site and community is shaping. People can agree/disagree and still have mutual respect.

No, I really don't care. I only comment because I truly think it's funny that you and others don't see how your casual corner and CGN's off topic are increasingly becoming the same, including this thread. That's all. Sorry to interrupt. Carry on.

Let’s entertain this. This is the list of topics in Casual Corner. Let’s compare with Calguns OT topics. Why don’t you go ahead and screen shot what the topic list looks like and bring it back here. Then we can have a laugh together. 🙂

I would screenshot but I can never reach the site and don’t spend time there anymore. Maybe it is the same.
