Springfield M1A Scout Squad with Trijicon VCOG

I have the scope already, which is the 1-8x MRAD variant of the VCOG that can be used with either 5.56 or 7.62. I got the scope new in box from a client as a bill payment, which was a favor to the client. But I freaking love this thing-- it has wonderful glass with an illuminated reticle and is Made in USA, obviously to military standards since it's an issued item. Because I have no platform suitable for it at the moment, I decided to buy myself a Springfield M1A Scout Squad rifle for my upcoming birthday and mount the VCOG on it, just so I have an excuse to use the scope for something cool. The funny thing is that the scope costs 50% more than the rifle, but it's going to be amazing, I think. I got the best scope mount I could find, which is from Fulton Armory and mounts to the side of the M1A. I believe this will allow co-witnessed iron sights, though I'm not really sure. This weapons system will replace my Ruger Scout for the car trunk, because it's going to be a lot of firepower and will cover every scenario I would have used the Ruger Scout in, and then some-- plus it should be similarly accurate with the same 18" barrel length. Anyone else have a VCOG in a similar setup, and if so, how do you like it?

I tried temporarily putting it on my precision AR-10, but the VCOG ends up being less than ideal for that platform...I would rather go with something dedicated to longer range for that one, plus I can't legally keep the AR-10 close at hand...lol. M1A with VCOG will be great, I think. Will report back on my impressions once I actually shoot it.

It will sit VERY high. The mounts on a VCOG are integral. No changing them out to get lower. Grow a bigger jaw, build up the stock, or buy a Sage chassis for $1500.

Before you go and put that contraption on there, bottom out your rear sight then come up 8-12 clicks. Get your zero at 100. Then remember 3,3,4,4,5. That’s where the M1A shines.

Or...Duct tape layers of camping foam to the top of the stock and call it good. I did that to my Savage 10FP in the field and it worked just fine for years. It was ugly, but it worked great. I learned that trick from former Marines.

But also try what Jarhead714 said. Maybe it's just a sight issue.

I got the M1A and scope mount, and scope, but I can't mount the scope yet-- the stripper clip guide is freaking jammed in the receiver and won't come out. I talked to Springfield and they gave me instructions-- need to put it in a bench vise and drift the guide right to left with a large punch and hammer. Or send it in for service. Lol. I'm torn between doing this myself and sending it in. A few more weeks for photos of this setup, either way. Sorry.

Stock pad is Bradley Cheek Rest, mine is adjustable kydex I think (been a really long time), red dot it Aimpoint Patrol Rifle Optic (PRO). I have aftermarket aluminum handguard top cover by M14.ca. Other than that I run the Smith Enterprise M14 US Coast Guard/Navy muzzle brake, works great and looks damn cool. :')

I tried my friend's VCOG, its clarity and light transmission were amazing. It also built like a tank. I would love to have one, minus its price lol.

I also have a M1A Scout Squad, which I currently have a simple Burris 2.75x-20mm Scout Scope on it. I'm getting older, and the M1A Scout Squad is a man's man rifle (heavy,) especially with a full magazine of 147g balls. If I mount a heavier scope on my Scout Squad, it would be pretty 'front heavy' for me to maneuver.

Still love my Scout Squad. Get yours, try different scopes on it, play around, and see which configuration best fits your need.

If I mount a heavier scope on my Scout Squad, it would be pretty 'front heavy' for me to maneuver.

Still love my Scout Squad. Get yours, try different scopes on it, play around, and see which configuration best fits your need.

I tried the Burris scout scope setup years ago and didn't care of the minimal magnification and making the gun super front heavy like you said, that's why I just switch to dot now to lighten up my setup, great rifle.

I like the concept of the Aimpoint PRO so much that I ordered one for the forward mount. Wouldn't that be cool to have the VCOG on the rear scope mount and see the Aimpoint dot in the VCOG reticle? Will try it out with either, and both, and will report back.

I’ve seen it done with a straight prism ACOG, but not an LPVO like the VCOG. Also, having two different sighting systems on two different mounts, one on the reciever and one on the barrel, isn’t a particularly good idea.
