Shadow Systems comp and barrel combo legality?

Hey all. Not sure if this is the right place to post but I was wondering if the Comp and barrel combo for the MR920/XR920 is legal in california? It uses a "trilug" system as opposed to the traditional threaded barrel. I've seen/heard mixed statements on it. Tried looking for the legislature on it and closest I found was penal code 30515 (4)(a) stating "A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer" and (4)(c) stating "A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning the bearer’s hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel". It is neither threaded nor is it a shroud that prevents burning the hand. Anyone got more info on this?

I think it’s similar to the Radian ramjet where it doesn’t use a threaded barrel. I’ve places like riflegear post a CA compliant shadow systems (the 5 in one with a compensator) for pre order so I think you’re good to go. The compensated model is on the roster now so there shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t quote me on that though.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same thing regarding your ramjet statement. In regards to the compensated model on the roster (dr920p) however, I believe that compensator is integrated into the gun and locks via a locking pin. The MR/XR compensator uses a different attachment method (trilug). I saw on their Instagram story an employee named Cody said it's not CA legal, so I emailed shadow systems to confirm and they replied saying "to my knowledge, the compensator mounting system is 50 state legal". Hence why I'm all confused since two people from their company stated two different things.

It’s not threaded, so it’s fine. SS mentions it in the description:

As for the IG comment, the MP-P and XR-P are not on the roster, maybe that’s what was meant by ‘not CA legal’?? The barrels are fine, though.

For those of you that are looking into comp'ed barrels, I recently purchased a radian ramjet/afterburner combo and while i do have ease of maintenance by being able to back the tapered screw out to remove the compensator if I wanted to, I have found that I am still able to completely clean my barrel and slide without removing by simply removing the guide rod and allowing my barrel to push forward so that the chamber is as far to the front of the slide as possible.
The reason I bring this up is because there are a lot of people looking into comp'ed barrels that would require a pin/weld to make legal due to the threaded barrel most comps require. After seeing how i dont even have to remove my radian setup to fully clean my upper/slide setup, I now would have no hesitation with a permanently attached barrel & compensator.
I know the shadow systems are not permanent, but this is more for the people kicking around the idea of getting a setup that would require p/w to be legal.

Found the california code that states it's not legal in ca. Cal code title 11 5471 (rr): "Threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer”
means a threaded barrel able to accept a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer,
and includes a threaded barrel with any one of those features already mounted on it. Some
firearms have “lugs” in lieu of threads on the end of the barrel. These lugs are used to
attach some versions of silencers. For purposes of this definition a lugged barrel is the
same as a threaded barrel". SS also confirmed that it is NOT legal as ca considers lugs as threaded.

That's good to know! Thank you! I might look into that option as I do like the look of the oem SS Comp over the radian.

20 years of discussion and the state keeps squirming around. There is no prohibition to mount a flash hider
using a taper. At least in the law. The physics of tapered fits fills text books, but not this post. Try to
understand the idea of the tangent of the angle of closure being the same as the coefficient of static friction.
Imagine a bullet button being used to retain a taper...

Already designed and just waiting for somebody that wants to go into production.

Explain that to me like I'm 5 lol

A tapered fit is a mechanical fastening mechanism that is neither lugs, nor threads nor splines. It consists
of nothing but geometry. But the geometry is designed based on the material properties of the two parts
to be joined. The Morse taper is a well known example. If the material properties are known, a taper can be
designed to fasten any two solids. Like a rifle barrel and a flash hider.

Trivially, the zero degree taper is a "press fit". But we want a tapered fit that is removable. The taper does
not even need to be round, but round tapers are easy to make so are the most common.

A bullet button is an already-accepted solution to removing things from rifles in CA. Is there anything
that prohibits the use of a bullet button to hold anything else on a rifle? Not that I can see. A bullet button
can be used as a "taper closed indicator", which indicates that the taper is locked.

Sure, there is more to it, but that is the basic idea.

There are many other variants that do not need threads or lugs. There are an infinite number of surface patterns
that can be EDM cut into a barrel surface, where the inverse pattern is cut into a device to be mounted to the
barrel. Easy to do these days. Think tapered cylindrical lock.

Is this pistol only? I legally bought rifles in CA with threaded barrels of varying types. Not saying which so the DOJ doesn't ruin it.

That's a no go. Shadow Systems claims that Commifornia sees the tri lug as a threaded barrel

The only way to get a comped Shadow Systems as of now is the DR920P

Seems like we are back 27 years ago when this idea first came up. My proposal at that time was for friction fit
barrel shrouds (compensators) that were to be gripped with the firearm. From a holster designed to hold both
in register so they could be draw and used together. The barrel shroud is not a part of the gun, not any more then
the holster.

The original discussion on rec.guns and rec.crafts.metalworking was to get around the CA regulation that was
OK with unloaded open carry in a car. A holster that inserted a loaded magazine was easy enough to make, but
since the magazine was part of gun, there was room for argumentation. A holster that auto-loaded a speed
loader into an revolver and closed the cylinder, well that seemed to have no legal problem. Pull the gun from
the special holster, and it was loaded. But it was not loaded when doing normal open carry. I proposed a patent,
but never filed it. Unloaded open carry went away for CA so this went nowhere. I moved to a free state and
open carry most days.
