Seeking opinions for a 7.62 X 51 rifle

If the world was ending I’d be grabbing an AR-15 for ammo capacity and weight.

I’ve always wanted to love the AR-10, just competes for reps against my AR-15.

This is what I'm afraid of. Weight kills it for me.

I'll be heading to Vegas for Memorial Day weekend and hopefully I can shoot some of what I'm looking at there. That will get me dialed in.

I have an AR-10 but have just never found a purpose for it other than it being “fun”. If I am doing a carbine course or “running and gunning” in any kind of shooting on the move range class I much prefer an AR-15. If I am shooting longer range I prefer a bolt gun. If the world was ending I’d be grabbing an AR-15 for ammo capacity and weight.

Agreed… but. If the world truly was ending and you had to pick one gun. Wouldn’t you want something strong enough to take down hunting game?

556 will take anything in California under 300 yards with the right bullet, in places you can hunt with lead the 77 SMK is extremely popular and known to be effective on deer down to 1600 fps which could be even up to 400 yards depending on your barrel and elevation. But also, there are barely enough deer to support hunting with a tag system that severely limits the amount we can harvest. If people are subsistence hunting they will be gone quite quickly. Estimates put total deer populations at around 500k for the state. Black bear around 50k.

In that case I would take a G19 concealed and a 22LR rifle for hunting squirrel, rabbits, birds, neighborhood cats. Processing/preserving big game in the apocalypse seems like a big task.

Very good point! Bow and arrows would probably be better suited anyhow.

Does t really matter where you go, subsistence hunting would support approximately 100 million people worldwide meaning only 1% of the population could survive, and that's only if it were managed properly. If we have 7 billion people hunting all of a sudden it would all just vaporize. None of us will be the ones that survive no matter what rifle you choose

I got mine a couple years ago but not sure it really matters? I mean isnt the dispute between B&T parent company and B&T USA? It’s not like the company is gonna cease to exist unless there’s something else. Sure short term how to get warranty work and stuff is up in the air, but might actually be an opportunity to find guns on fire sale. Who knows.

Catalina Island looks like a safe location in a zombie tv series.
Florida has a lot of things to eat everywhere. Iguanas, gators, and ocean life.
Land locked places just seem like places that will be infested with diseases. Like the diseased rabbits in Colorado.

People would starve immediately without the insanely complex logistics that supply a large city. No one thinks about how food gets to the grocery store they visit twice a week… we’ve never been this concentrated before and if the supply chain or power grid failed, people would be eating their neighbors in a month or two. If you think this is crazy talk, just look at any one of the many historical examples. They had to make propaganda signs in the 30s telling Ukrainians not to eat their children

There is a lot of darkness and base instinct beneath the thin veneer of civilization, and it hangs by a thinner thread than most people realize…
