Video Savage AccuTrigger "lock up" fix

My Savage model 11 has been good to me for the last 10 years but recently developed a problem where the trigger would lock up regardless of how light or heavy that I set the trigger. It seems to be a common problem. I was searching on how to fix it and found some information but no clear instructions on what to do. So I decided to make a video on how to fix it. It appears that the cause of my issue was the trigger adjustment spring. It could be wear and tear over the years to cause it to lose tension. I replaced it and that solved the problem.

The part you need is called " Accu-Trigger Target Trigger Spring - 105270 ", https://www.gunshack.com/accu-trigger-target-trigger-spring (no affiliation). It came from Savage's target rifles line up so it's lighter than the original spring. I have it at about 1.5-1.8lbs now (according to my Wheeler digital trigger pull gauge).

I had a pretty similar issue with my 22 Hornet Walking Varminter. The issue on mine wasnt the spring, it was the steel halves that were stamped to form the trigger group splayed out so I had to shim the entire thing to get it back to true. The sear would engage cockeyed and lock the entire thing up.

Feels great now, but definitely a little heavier - but it is more predictable at least.

I was noticing there was a fair bit of side-side play and if I pushed it to the side slightly as I squeezed, the sear wouldn't sit true as it should have disengaged, so it just locked together. I sat with it out of the action just staring at the sear engagement while using a clamp to hold the halves of the assembly together. Racking the bolt as fast as I could wouldn't cause it to fail, but if I relieved the compression, it'd happen without a question. What made it worse, is the upper lip of the accutrigger would sometimes catch the sear and just completely lock the motherless up.

Got some cheap 304 stainless shims for RC car differential trueing for like $4 off amazon and they did the trick of getting everything squared. You can see teh blade of the accutrigger locking it up in this picture.

Oh man yeah that sounds like a design flaw but I'm glad you figured it out. I just recently upgraded my stock to Magpul Hunter 110 with a harden aluminum bedding block. It's holding everything in place tightly with no flex. So I hope I don't run into similar problems like yours.

It's still got its issues. Trigger is a 2-1/4 pound now pretty consistently but it still has ejection issues and I think it's the extractor. Seems like it is letting the brass slip out of position too early.

But I'm not looking forward to that repair 🫩

I actually got it from a pawn shop so it's been just chasing its issues as they come up. I've probably sent less than 200 through it - if it wasn't such an accurate gun I probably wouldn't have given it this much time.

Ditch the music.
It adds nothing but does make the video harder to comprehend.
