In case no one has answered your question yet - yes, you can do CCW modifications in San Mateo County now.

Hi everyone - just wanted to pass along some advice from what we've been seeing with the renewals for San Mateo County. As soon as you hit your 90 day window for renewals, apply for that renewal and also go get your training. You don't need permission like your initial application for the training as long as it happens after you submit your renewal application. We spoke to someone in the CCW unit and they don't mind the training being done before you receive "permission" to get your renewal training, but they don't want applicants wasting their time or money if something happens and they don't get approved. Food for thought!

For my new San Mateo County application in early 2023, it took 15 months before I got to the Zoom interview, then I received approval to move on to the psych eval within about a month. I had to do the full MMPI-2 (567 questions) immediately followed by a clinical interview with a psychologist. First question from him: "do you think you could actually kill a person?" I said that I hoped it would never happen, but that in a self-defense scenario, yes, I could do that. It was an interesting conversation in which he asked about my guns, asked about prior military service, and asked whether I had ever experienced a hallucination. At one point, I joked that I hoped he noticed that I used a pen on my answer sheet because I was committed to my answers, and he commented that it was a brave choice. he said he saw no issues but the agency would make the final determination. I ultimately passed and finally got the permit four months after that. 19 months all in from application to permit in hand. I certainly hope renewals are faster. The Zoom interview was funny because the investigator said she had already reviewed my entire portfolio of websites (a lot of material) and had already looked at every single one of my cases on the court portal. Since I'm a lawyer, I have about 150 cases on the court portal just in this county. Lol. I'm not complaining, because I'm proud to exercise this right every day.
 
One other challenge is the change of address. I moved within the county but did not change my work address, so I notified them via email of my new address. They said I still have to submit a modification application on Permitium, which is inconsistent with the statute that only requires notice of the new address. I tried to do that, but it kept taking me to the full new application screen. They claimed it's the same application when you change your address, but that's not in the statute. Frustrating.
 
I had my CCW renewal qualification yesterday with Saber Tactics, and as always it was a professional and enjoyable experience, up in the woods at the beautiful Los Altos Rod and Gun Club, heartily recommended!

We were on the old shoot whatever you want range from yester-year (as long as you cleaned it up!), in between the covered rifle and pistol ranges.

The weather was was dicey early on, but it didn't actually rain on us, woo hoo!

I just received my CCW renewal pickup date, nine business days after submitting my training cert, so thank you Saber Tactics and great job SMCSO!
 
They did my address change permit modification with no issues. It took about five days, all in. From their email, I thought I would have to qualify again, but they accepted by qualification from 7 months ago, which makes sense since it should be good for two years. I pick up the replacement card in the near future.
 
Picked up my new permit today, all smooth, and thanks to all at Saber Tactics and the SMCSO's CCW unit which BTW is now located at 330 Bradford Redwood City, CA (nice new digs!).
 
Has anyone that submitted an application prior to 2024 been asked to provide references? I thought I read that was only for applications submitted in 2024 and beyond.

Anyway, slow going process as a first-time applicant, I'm 18 months in.

My progress so far:
12/26/23- applied
12/27/23 - SMCS confirms receipt
12/29/23 - livescan
12/31/23- provided ATI to SMCS
5/16/25- in-person interview
7/9/25 - request for 3 references

Sage advice- I suggest you don't put Christina Corpus as a reference.
 
Hi guys! Just wanted to give you all a quick heads up - we're increasing the amount of CCW classes to accommodate demand with at least one CCW class per week, and we are now expanding over to Richmond Rod and Gun Club as well as the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club. Let us know if you have any questions!
 
Seems odd to me, but if I was the one that had applied and got this info, I'd post-haste be sending in an alternative contact (whom I have briefed about how to handle themselves) for them to contact. Grease the skids baby- lots of Wesson oil!
