"they'll be backlogged for longer than the CCW is valid" Yep. I got a sinking feeling that is the intention. On the bright side, I expect they are going to get this sherriff out one way or the other.......
 
LOL, it must have been that threat of litigation that broke the logjam! I got a call this morning saying I could pick up my CCW on Wednesday. I did my qual on Dec. 8, so considering the intervening holidays and even aside from all the vacancies at the sherriff's department, I think that is not too bad.

Hopefully the rest of you wil lbe getting the call soon.
 
Does anyone happen to know if they're allowing modifications to add guns again? In the early communication I have they mention no modifications to add guns, but I can't find any mention of that restriction on permitium anymore. So I was wondering if they rescinded that restriction?

Picked up my CCW. Did qual on Dec. 8. There is hope in SM County, they are not waiting for new sheriff.

Couple points to note. Leila Aziz is the new Jennifer Valdez. She is every bit as efficient and pleasant to deal with as Jennifer.

I was surprised to see license listed occupation, employer and employer address on the card . I co-founded my company and have a lot of employment security, but we are very likely to move offices in the next two years. I need to look into duty to update info, if any. License also lists weapons on your permit and has your thumbprint on the back. You don’t want to lose this card, fellas.

Finally, Leila said they will be sending out renewal notices at 120 days going forward. Right now, rules only allow you to start process at 90 days, but she said she thought that was going to change. She did mention they are swamped with permits but doing the best they can.

the interview went over all your police encounters in your life. Good grief. They dug up some memories from over 10 years ago. At the end, they said I should disclose these in the renewal even if nothing came out of it. I didn’t feel like I should have to explain everything since I did nothing wrong.

To alleviate any confusion, this is not solely contained with the San Mateo County nor is it new. The original FD 4501 (Firearms Department) paper (or “rice paper) license contained all of this information. Below is a copy of a Ventura Cty license from a ways back. (Note the IA screwed up the weapon ID and didn’t list the calibers.)

The newly-approved hard copy of the BOF 4501 (Bureau of Firearms) is in a different format, but carries the same information:

All that time to prepare and they wonked the field for Business address (and why do they or you want that)? Surprised they don't have data fields on all four edges. Or do they?....

That was the SD license with red margin comments. I cropped them when making the photo. (Ya gotta use what the internet gives ya.) But, the black ink entries are the state license. I ditched that example for a more clear example.

I suspect they want the Business address in the off-chance a license is issued for work purposes.

Interesting. My old card from San Mateo County did not list occupation, employer or employer address. It also didn’t have a fingerprint on it. It did have weapons listed.

I cant find any copies of my old rice permits right now, but I'm pretty sure they had all that info.

Some agencies began issuing hard card CCW identification documents prior to the statute change which authorized those cards. They were NOT the license, but were indicia of having the license. Local agencies designed their own cards. With a change to the statute, the AG was directed to accept local licenses and create a license for issuance with standardized info and data, but neither Harris nor her successors did so. SB 2 addressed that by placing deadlines on construction of the new format. (See CA PEN 26175, generally).

And they noticed what many of us did- for 10 years (I know of) nowhere did it require us to possess/carry the (any- DOJ or IA) card when CCW. That got changed last year I think. Pushy bastids...

It was also a part of SB 2. But, if you think about it, the application required one to produce the license for any LEO demand. If you didn't have the license, then you ran the risk of being hauled in until they could manually contact the IA and confirm the license. (Of course, they could also have queried LEO systems looking for a rap sheet which would have returned your CII number and traced to the license, but then you're at the mercy of CA DOJ updating databases.)
 
What are the expectations after submitting your training completion certificate? I emailed it to sheriffs_ccw@ on 1/6/25 and uploaded to permitium. Last week I called the two phone numbers in permitium. 1662 is constantly a busy signal and 2340 goes to the county hospital operator from which I was transferred to the sheriff's office where I left a voicemail. Thanks in advance anybody!
 
Anyone know what the current wait time is? I’m moving from SF later this year, and I’m not looking forwards to having to reapply just because I’m changing counties :(.

Honestly, you might have better luck reapplying with SF County - they seem to be moving faster than San Mateo at this point..

- Coming from a SF County CCW holder.
