I've migrated over from calguns and figured I'd start a San Joaquin County CCW thread.

Just recently completed another renewal. Started the renewal process 90 days prior to my expiration date and was approved within a week or two after submitting everything except for the training certificate.

I have always done training with Valley Defense but decided to switch it up. Went with Trident Firearms Academy this time and they were great. I will continue to use them. They recently changed ranges for the shooting portion of the class and its at Manteca Sportsmen which for me is closer to home than Valley Defense who uses the police range in Ceres.

Renewal process with San Joaquin Sheriffs office was smooth and quick. Everything was online since I had no changes, tickets, or anything that might require a phone call or interview. My new CCW is finally an actual plastic card instead of the old laminated paper license.

Security at the Sheriffs office sure has changed. I remember being able to walk into the building and making my way to the Sheriffs office. Now its blocked off and you have to check-in and then go through a metal detector. I think it's been like this for 3 or 4 years now.

For anyone looking to get a CCW in San Joaquin County, a clean record and "self protection" should be all you need. If you live in Ripon, I believe their Police Department issues quicker than the Sheriffs Office. For all other cities in this county, the Sheriffs office is your only option.

Just completed my 5th renewal. The training sure has changed. Apparently Stanislaus trainers got busted for doing something shady and they revoked all the permits for that trainer.
Sjcso has always been a pleasure to work with.

Just wanted to say that I have been working with Called2Arms in Modesto on my renewal. It's been a struggle but they finally have the offical go ahead as of today. Jerry has been great to work with on this.

Going to renew soon. Are they still requring you to hold the 2 separate cards to keep your CCW valid or have they consolidated it to one?

My buddy picked up his renewal in January and they only gave him the hard card.

Start here. https://sjsheriff.org/concealed-weapon-program. Actual link to the application is under the "Training Requirements" tab. Instructions are pretty straightforward.

Basically you go to the site and click on the link. 1) Fill out the permit application on the Permitium system. 2) Get a LiveScan done. I was able to use a location in my city. I needed to give the LiveScan operator the provided information for a couple of boxes. 3) Set up the "Interview". This was done by phone iirc. SjSO basically confirmed the information I provided on the application. 4) Received information that I was approved. 5) Find an "Approved Vendor" from the list for the CCW class. I used AIM FT for my initial ccw. For renewal, I picked Leo Defensive. They teach at the range I go to (Livermore Rod and Gun Club). I had heard good things and was not disappointed. If you expect/want to actually get training, I would recommend both vendors. Neither are the kind where you just "show up to get a qual". 6) Submitted my class certificate via Permitium. 7) Notified by SJSO to set appointment to pick up my permit.

I used Called2Arms for my most recent renewal, since the training requirement has gone from 4 hours to 8 hours and I didn’t want to sit outside or in a classroom for a full day. Being able to do most of it at your own pace online at home was a game changer. Called2Arms is definitely the way to go now for me.

They figured out how to get the fingerprint on the hard card now, so the additional card with the fingerprint is no longer needed. Plus, the new hard card is better quality than the old one, so it’s a big win all around.

Just got my second renewal finished and thought I'd post my timeline in case anybody has an upcoming renewal.

11/17 - submitted my application with docs to Permitium.
12/5 - today (got my approval email, call and text).
1/16 - Pickup day since I'll be out of town during Christmas and New Year.

Pretty quick and trouble free compared to other counties. Just like my first renewal I wasn't contacted at any point by the Sheriff's Office.
Hats off to the SJSO for making this renewal process quick and seamless. Lots of pick up appointment day/times in January - M,W,F.
