I emailed SFPD about a follow up since it had been over a month since I submitted my training

Email said, they'll be mailing it to us

Oh interesting; the email from Permitium said:

A member of the San Francisco Police Department's CCW Unit will contact you via email or phone to coordinate your CCW license pick-up appointment. Be aware that this message may come from a blocked number.

When I got my original 2 years ago, they had us come in to pick them up because they needed our fingerprint on the "card".
 
So for anyone curious about renewal timeline

April 2nd - started renewal application
May 14th - given the go ahead to do training, after I emailed them for a follow up
May 22nd - phone call interview, just going over application
June 14th - training completed and submitted
July 21st - follow up renewal progress sent
July 23rd - emailed response saying chief will sign off and it'll get mailed
July 25th - Renewal Permit issued
Presently waiting on it coming in

Yeah I know thats what CFARS says but my email with CCW Unit said

"(My Name) your application is ready for the Chief to sign.
Unfortunately, he had to cancel the signing on 7/18, but has rescheduled the signing for tomorrow, 7/24
Once your license has been signed, it will be mailed to you
Thanks"

Send them an email and see if you need to go in, hopefully it's like mine and it'll be mailed
 
Got caught up with life and forgot to start my renewal (90 days from expiration was earlier this month).

Just submitted my renewal application - first time using Permitium; it's much more seamless than filling out the old BOF 4012 manually.

Fingers crossed I get a response to start (renewal) training soon!
 
The automated approval email said someone would reach out to me for pickup scheduling, but when I asked the next day, I got a reply saying they'll be mailing the card due to staffing (limitation). This was today. I'm hoping I'll be receiving the card in the mail in a day or two.

Wonder if the Chief even reads any of the stack of applications or renewals sitting there for his signature? I suspect its turn and burn and get 'em knocked out, ya gotta trust the folks who prepared them.

Not surprised

I doubt they'd staff that unit heavily, I dont think there's a ton of people applying/possessing a CCW

I was told the previous Chief did read through the stack of applicants prior to signing, not too sure about the current interim Chief who was just appointment out of retirement. He's probably busy with all of the leadership turnover (filling in key positions) to actually read through them - that's my guess...

You're right; I sent them an email, and they said that they are indeed mailing out the permits that have been approved, and to expect them by this weekend.

Unfortunately the one thing SFPD doesn’t let you do is use a different caliber from what it was DROS’d as. I’d have to do the pawn shop hack to DROS it back to myself configured as a 50AE. Believe you me, I tried to get it done. Other than that, SFPD has no restrictions on calibers, so even the S&W 500 snubby is a-ok.
 
Also got mine on Friday. Online application submitted on 3/18, issue date 7/31. The last bit (chief/lieutenant signatures) took a bit long, but all in all, a lot quicker than other counties/cities so I have no complaints. SFPD CCW Unit guys were great to work with as well.

SFPD CCW Unit Contact: 9/26/2025 - Permit sent to chief for signing, then will be mailed to me
CCW Renewal Permit Received in Mail: TBD

Life got in the way and I lagged on my training/shoot qual. But overall, it's been a smooth process (much like my initial app) with the SFPD CCW unit.

I will also add, for those looking for a SB2 instructor; I highly recommend Bay Area Tactical (I am not affiliated with them, nor was I compensated to say this). They hold both a classroom and shoot session at the San Leandro Range, as well as a private range in Livermore (certain dates). If you are renewing like me, it went from quick classroom session, straight into range time/qual test. Then another online Zoom call (after working hours) to satisfy the 8-hour requirement. If you're not one for sitting through a long classroom session, you will like their format. A bunch of their instructors are current/former LEOs and they're extremely easygoing and knowledgeable.

Seems to be the trend with SFPD these days. I submitted my training (almost exactly) a month ago, and finally got word today that it was approved and should be mailed out soon.

Here is my updated timeline:

Renewal Application Submitted/Paid: 7/28/2025
SFPD CCW Unit Contact: 8/5/2025 (called me and requested submission of out-of-state CCWs)
