Hi, I’m interested in classes on the basics of shooting a long gun. Proper stances, sighting in the gun, adjusting for distance, etc. I’ve seen a bunch of pistol classes, but I’m already reasonably confident with handguns. I’ve got very little clue what to do with a rifle. If it matters, I’d be learning on a very entry-level bolt action .308. Does anyone have recommendations about who I can contact or ranges that offer classes within a reasonable distance?

West Coast Long Range does classes but honestly I would just watch youtube stuff and go shoot and see what works. It helps if you have a goal i.e. hunting, targets at x distance etc. But you can shoot up to 300 yards at Sac Valley without getting a membership.

Sac Valley used to have NRA Midrange and F-class matches in the past, Folsom shooting club I think it was. These are shot slow fire, prone, at fixed distance 300 and 600yds. Good bunch of people, friendly and super helpful for newbies. The targets are pretty big, and everyone knows the proper dope for elevation/wind. Unfortunately I'm in So Cal or I'd invite you to one of our matches/practices. We always have "new shooters" showing up and there's a few regulars helping them get situated and teaching the fundamentals.

Non-Virtual accurate long range shooting costs big bucks. Especially when you live anywhere in population dense Calfornia Counties.

There are plenty of shooters firing at distant targets and calling it good and inexpensive.

And then there are those that think the purpose of shooting is hitting.
