Retrieving C&R long/hand guns from out of state family

Was chatting with my sis in Florida and she mentioned that they had a couple of long guns and hand guns stored at their old house near Atlanta (their son now owns the house).

These were firearms her husband and his late father used way back in the day for hunting in PA. They and the son don't really have any interest in keeping them when they get around to digging them out of the attic.

I of course said, I'd be potentially interested in taking them off your hands. I would have to verify but I'm assuming all of them are likely C&R and not registered anywhere (my bro in law is in his 70s). These were used for hunting so not likely anything illegal in CA.

I have a FFL03/COE so if that is the case, can gifted long guns be shipped directly to me (via USPS) but the handguns would have to be shipped to an FFL in CA? Or do both C&R long guns and handguns need to be shipped to an FFL if they are a gift from family?

If I was visiting Georgia or Florida (if the son moved the guns down there), can I basically put all of them in a locked case(s), just declare them at the airport & check them as baggage and bring them home?

Pistols must be shipped to an instate FFL. Just go ahead and do it as such.

My understanding is that when shipping they would still need to go to an FFL01 (maybe overly cautious). If you go visit and bring them back than you just have to log them in your bound book and report online as usual. Transport on the airline as you would any other firearms.

Regular Intrafamilial transfer is only between individuals who are related within 2 generations up/down, grandparent, parent, child. No sisters, no BILs, nobody but direct line. See: CA PEN 27875(a)(2).

Firearms crossing state lines by shipment must go through an FFL and are subject to all CA laws. While C&R federally can be shipped to your door, CA statutes require shipment to an FFL-01.

An FFL-03 can obtain firearms in person when out-of-state, but must report them to DOJ upon bringing them into the state. See: CA PEN 27565

C&R long guns can ship straight to your 03/COE, handguns can’t they need a FFL.
If you fly out and pick them up yourself, just pack them in a locked case, declare them, and check them like any other firearm.

theres basically no chance it applies from what it sounds, but just in case one of them applies, but there is also an exception to "imported firearms" being sent to an FFL01 if the firearm is a federally exempt antique, that is a firearm RECIEVER (very important) that was made prior to December 31st, 1898, those you can send straight to your doorstep. Why i specify reciever is because the firearm may be modified afterwards but so long as the reciever itself was made prior to the cutoff date such as 1886 Lebels, where 99.9% all were made prior to cutoff but most of them were rebarreled sometime before or during WW1, then it is still legally considered an antique.
