Recoil Spring Question

Been wanting to start tinkering with my guns and one of the first things I’m considering doing is a new recoil spring for my CZ 75d Compact. I’ve heard it makes a noticeable difference in felt recoil and performance of the gun.
So my questions are:
1. Is this worth doing? Does it make a positive difference?
2. What weight would I switch to for mostly range visits and self defense?
3. Apparently CGW isn’t shipping to Cali, so any other recommended places to get it? I’ve seen Wolff, BH, etc but don’t have experience on any of them.

Any and all guidance would be greatly appreciated.

PS while we’re on the subject any other beginner/doable mods y’all recommend for a G19, PX4 Storm or the CZ?

I run 14# in my P01's, but I occasionally run them with the OEM spring depending on which ammo I'm shooting or what I'm training at the time. I will say I personally hated how it slammed the slide with springs below 14#.

I guess my main question is what don't you currently like about your felt recoil? Are you trying to get it to snap back as soon as possible to get back on target? Are you recoil sensitive? Is it prohibitive just to get multiples weights and figure out what feels best?

I've run Wolff on other platforms and didn't have any issues. That's a bummer about CGW; I liked them because they color coded their springs and I'm a very simple person 😂

You're possibly going to create problems.

Generally speaking, the MOST RELIABLE recoil spring is going to be the one that came with the gun. Leave it alone. You are referencing "self defense". "Self defense" means "should be as reliable as possible". Simplest way to keep it reliable is not mess with the springs.

Or, if you do, run 500 malfunction free rounds of your SD ammo through it before you consider it reliable in the new configuration.

I certainly wouldn’t mind a dampened recoil but mostly I want to dip my toes in modding my guns. Multiple springs would be an option, I guess I was just trying to be efferent/draw on others’ experience.

TBH I’d prefer to run stock, but I see so many people “cajunize” their CZs, or put “Johnny Glock” triggers on their Glock, or other mods, it had me intrigued and I assumed there was a benefit to doing so…

I'm just a guy on the internet but on my Glock, I immediately started tweaking trigger stuff, but over time went back to completely OEM (i.e. known quantity) trigger parts. Only thing that is not Glock brand on my gun at this point is a trigger shoe.

People like to tinker for tinkering sake. Spend the money on ammo.
 
Totally get wanting to tinker. Recoil spring changes can make a difference, but it’s usually pretty subtle. Factory springs are generally well balanced for reliability, especially on guns that might be used for defense, so don’t expect a huge recoil reduction.

There’s no magic spring weight either, lighter/heavier both have tradeoffs, and going too far can cause reliability issues. If you do change it, definitely test it with whatever ammo you plan to run.

CGW is great but yeah, Cali makes things annoying. Wolff and similar well known brands are commonly used, just make sure it’s the correct part for your exact model.

Honestly, for beginner mods I’d put springs low on the list. Sights, grip improvements, dry fire, and range time usually give way more noticeable results.

The only beginner mod I'd recommend is milling an optic. Aside from that, do a 💩load of dry fire practice to build your trigger pulls. Develop some solid fundamentals so you can benefit from the mods you do. You don't wanna be the guy with the tricked out gun that can't hit anything lol. Also make sure to dry fire with snap caps. It'll keep you from needing to replace the roll pins too often.
