in order to revert to subsistence hunting and farming without fuel and technology means that 99% of the population also needs to die. It's just something you really don't have to worry about because you are probably the one that's gonna die, and it won't happen at once in a huge catastrophe it will likely be a slow and painful death of starvation and water borne illness. It will probably be less painful if you have no survival skills actually because you will die quicker.

In a dire reset situation, social skills will be among the most valuable. We social primates always need our tribe, and those tribes will be quick to eject troublemakers (even if they have 5k1LL5). Naturally, people will be utilized where they are strongest, perhaps in a few categories to keep it interesting.

It would be a true merit-based society, just how humans started out in the first place. Pragmatic social skills will carry the day.

Actually, a very real threat to modern existence is the EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) attack. There are numerous ways to generate an EMP including the detonation of nuclear weapons. A single detonation at 500km altitude over the central US (Kansas / Nebraska) of a Super EMP weapon with a relatively small yield in the kiloton range would produce a devastating EMP, even when compared to a strategic nuclear warhead. This would be enough to literally destroy every unshielded modern era electronic device From the Atlantic to the Pacific in the US. This includes every power grid in the USA.

EMP's work through the Compton effect and will destroy every discrete electronic component that is based upon MOSFET and FET technology, which includes virtually every integrated circuit and transistor in use today.

The result would be absolutely no deaths, injuries or physical damage on the ground from the nuclear detonation but such an attack would instantaneously regress our society back to the mid - late 19th century. So, in the US we would have approximately 330 million people competing for remaining stores of resources including clean water and then, it would get very nasty as we Americans are no longer known for cooperating with each other.

Who could launch such an attack? Virtually any nation with the ability to build a small nuclear weapon and deliver it via a ballistic missile and it would not have to be launched from their homeland, it could be launched from a freighter in the Gulf of Mexico.

I think that aligns with what I said when I said slow and painful. At this population we won't be able to support nearly anyone unless we get energy back. If we had enough gas reserves we could, but people don't realize how much work it is to get water and sewage to their house. Not to mention clean water.

I couldn't really tell if you were saying that subsistence providing wouldn't be required unless 99% of the population were to die. So, I took a deep dive into my undergrad schooling and military experience to share some of the grim realities. An EMP attack was one of those scenarios we would war game and the only response was to do the same thing to our adversaries and after that, we would put on our overalls and start hoeing fields by hand.

Not as bad as an all out thermo-nuclear war, no nuclear winter, no real radiation but, we half jokingly figured there would be a huge supply of Soylent Green.... If you remember that old Heston flick?

I actually know a girl that runs a farm and plows with horses but as you can imagine it's only hipsters that do so anymore. So she might be fine. But yeah, Soylent.
