Love my P64, it is small, accurate and the 9x18 Makarov round is potent enough, straight blowback action is simple. I use it only in Single Action mode. However, this is old school style carry without a round in the chamber, makes it unrealistic for modern day EDC. And without firing pin block, it is Not drop safe. Curious to know if any of you out there thought about carrying P64 as EDC?

The rule of thumb is proficiency. Is it practical? What are your holster and concealment options with that model ? Will you be comfortable in that holster all day? How fast can you draw your gun and get an accurate shot? 2 seconds ? 1.5 seconds ? How accurate are you with the pistol when shooting and moving? Reloading and moving?
If you put the time in , almost any gun will work. Will you be able to get thousands of rounds of that caliber to drill with? What are you using to gauge improvement?
Some fellow shooters encouraged me to compete , as they did, in every day clothes , with my everyday carry set up. It was eye opening. That , more than anything, influenced my CCW pistol , holster and mag pouch choices.

The only guy I've ever heard of who carried a Makarov for ccw was Brandon Herrera like 3 or 4 years ago. I don't see an issue with carrying one so long as you're competent with it and your issuing agency doesn't have some weird rule about calibers or safety features.
Ok, first off it is inaccurate to say the P64 is “not drop safe”. I don’t believe this has ever been formally tested and no one has ever demonstrated a drop fire. The hammer has protections to prevent a drop on the rear from causing an AD. You would have to drop it on the muzzle and from what I’ve read it just doesn’t have enough inertia to cause an AD according to people who have tried.
Second, if you’re concerned about drop safety just carry with the safety enabled. The firing pin is completely immobilized.
I would not hesitate to carry mine with or without the safety engaged. But make sure your gun is in good condition and well maintained. These are old guns.
They aren’t pleasant to shoot but at least in good light with a static target mine is unbelievable accurate.
