Pistol recommendations for Limited optics / Carry optics

Does anyone know how much it is out the door for a SSE platypus? Nothing fancy, all black for the most part.

A standard build with all black H series cerakote is around $2500 otd. Custom builds and E series cerakote with bump it up a bit.

to be pedantic, the video shows him in 23rd place with 83%. He's a great shooter but he wasn't at the top shooting a Glock 26.

Wow is that all? I thought the base 2011s were more than that… RIP my financial future

Stick with your Glock 34, or commit to learning DA/SA with an SP-01/Shadow 2.

The platypus is known.as a "budget" 2011, they have an aluminum frame also

Not really a "2011", more accurately a double stack 1911. 2011's have a seperate frame and grip module. The Platypus has a one piece frame and grip just like a 1911.

It’s hard to be a bad shooter if you are a GM. And I also think that the event he is at in that video he was shooting G not GM. That was 5 years ago. So the bottom line is he made GM on a G26. Bottom line is it’s fun to have top tier stuff! But…..

Not really a "2011", more accurately a double stack 1911. 2011's have a seperate frame and grip module. The Platypus has a one piece frame and grip just like a 1911.

I understand the distinction but I also think that "2011" is the perfect name for a "double stack 1911" and also since "2011" is an STI trademark you could argue that most 2011s aren't actually 2011s. They're all 2011s though as far as I'm concerned.

"G" means GM. Either way no one is saying he's bad by any stretch but does equipment matter? Yeah. Is it everything? No. Can you do well with a tiny pistol? Yeah. Can you beat the top guys with a tiny pistol? Probably not. Can any of us beat the top guys with any pistol? Also no.

I have about 4k rounds through my Platypus and have enjoyed it thoroughly. When I go to the range it and my Glock 19 are the two pistols I bring 100% of the time. In my experience I have only ever had malfunctions (light primer strike) when running cheap Turkish brass plated steel case 124gr, but my Glock shoots that fine. I have never shot 115gr in it.

Definitely agree with you that's why i put 2011 in quotes. Some don't understand the distinction and that 2011 is a trademark of STI/Stacatto. I think 2011 style is a better terminology to avoid trademark infringement

I think we can all agree that most people just need to shoot more with whatever gun, and perhaps the best gun to choose is one you already have.

The entire point about the guy reaching grandmaster in 6-7 months with a G26 is that natural ability and focused training matters far more than “getting the right gun.”

Of course a Shadow 2 holds many advantages over a striker fired pistol, particularly a subcompact. But for most people, just training is the big differentiator.

It’s much more fun to shop guns than it is to dry fire 30 minutes every night. Especially if you keep your CA compliant gun stock and have to have an empty magazine just to pull the trigger.

That guy just took the pistol he had and made it to nationals in less than a year. Forget that he used a G26, that’s already impressive!


I guess the two big factions are

1) train with the gun you have

2) get the coolest firearm you can


I fall into the former, and prefer using the latter as a reward for training. Because a nicer trigger, heavier gun, etc. are all great. But the differences in pistols really matter after honing technique and putting in the time and effort to train and improve.

LOl, I’m using the fancy gun as reward for training. Otherwise, I would just keep finding another one to buy, thereby justifying why I’m not training yet…

I picked up a bone stock Shadow 2 (blue) in the last few months.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think a pistol could improve my shooting that much but holy it’s such a nice gun!

Especially at distance, 20+ yards…being able group more tightly speed at that range (with irons) feels pretty awesome.

Just too heavy to carry and I also wouldn’t carry a hammer fired gun. But maybe one of these days I’ll pickup a compact.

But that DA to SA still trips me up a bit
