Old relics

I have an old broken coach style double barreled shotgun. The stock broke in the usual place for these. Can find a replacement. There is a small dent in one barrel about half way down. I would never trust it. My step father said it was his grandfather's. No one else in my family really cares about guns. I have a few other various old relics that are not worth anything. I'm aging faster than I care to admit. I need to make a plan. I know I can't be the first to have to cross this bridge. What would you do with these "worthless family heirlooms" ?

I'd say have a maximum budget then start calling places up for quote to replace or repair whatever you want fixed on that coach gun. Maybe you'll find a place that'll have reasonable prices and get your heirloom back in functional shape.

If you don’t have any direct descendants to pass them to, consider extended family, friends, or even acquaintances that are into firearms. For me, I’d rather my pieces go to someone that will use them and appreciate them enough to pass down to their descendants, rather than ending up as scrap.

...or just make it a wall-hanger over the fireplace.

Since it seems that you will never fire it, and if you still have the pieces of the stock, then I would make it a wall hanger and remove the firing pin. Keep it though and label it so some future someone can restore it if they want to. And, of course, get the stock repaired.

One of the last Cash & Carry purchases I did, was a garage sale Baker Batavia Damascus coach, $25 bucks. The barrels were both dinged a bit, not much corrosion, the stock was well worn but gorgeous, no cracks. Total Wells Fargoish. If it looks like Gorilla glue will patch yours up, have at it. PAX

I buy these types of guns for my movies quite often.

I produce but I also keep a large storage of prop guns which I rent to the projects I produce -- I enjoy collecting.

We use them as decorative dressing in scenes, a shotgun on the wall, in a drug den, etc., or if they still fire, we convert them to work with blanks - blanks do not put the same pressure on an old gun that a live round does and many worthless old relics find quite an exciting second life on screen.

(I've been tidying the gun-room of items I don't use or need anymore and have used a combo of Ebay, Gunbroker and Gunboards classifieds - they're all easy to use.)
