Muzzle break advise

Never had a muzzle device start coming loose, since you have a shim/washer how much torque are you applying? Use a legit wrench and make sure it's gutentight
 
Yeah, I have crush washer and shims such that the break torques to the relative 12 o’clock position with hand tightening.

Do you think placing the shims before the crush washer would make a difference? Right now, the order is crush washer, shims, break.
Do not combine crush washers with shims.
Use one or the other.
In your case of wanting to remove and re-install more than once, shims are your solution.

Crush washers are designed to be installed only once.
If you re-use a crush washer, it's not going to hold well unless you are properly crushing it every time.
Crush washers normally only have 1.25-1.5 turns of crush available in them before they go to flat so you can't use them more than once as they require at least 1/4 turn of crush each time.

It takes a good 70ft lbs to get it going.

You need a bench vice, an upper block or action rod, and a long torque wrench at least 15”

Last time I did one I had to lean all my weight on the wrench to get it to start crushing.

They are supposed to crush at 18-21ft-lbs of applied torque.
At least thats the milspec for them.

There are some really hard ones on the market that might be up where you are talking about and are certainly unsafe to use on 0.035" wall thickness 9mm barrels with 1/2x28 threads.
I throw those hard ones out when I come across them as they are WAY stiffer than they should be.
 
I don’t have experience with muzzle brakes on rifles. But since we’re on the topic, is it worth getting a comp on a threaded barrel for a handgun and getting it pinned and welded?
It depends. If you're running a 22lr for steel challenge, having a threaded barrel with a comp could give you an edge over the next guy. I was thinking about doing just that, but cleaning was going to be a bear. I decided just to shoot my original barrel since I'm mediocre at best anyway.

Had to make due as it was the last one but I’ll keep that in mind for the future, that’s good to know
 
So, I tried Rockset. The directions say it cures in 24 hours. I put what seemed like an appropriate amount on the threads, then tightened the brake. After 24+ hours, I can tell the Rockset has not cured at all. What gives?

It's usually contamination on the threads like oil, carbon, cleaning products, etc... Also, if you put too much on it won't set properly, doesn't usually need much more than 1 drop, maybe 2. I usually degrease with acetone and blast it with some brake cleaner before applying.

Rocksett works by the water evaporating in the liquid, Loctite works in an anaerobic environment, they are almost the opposite of each other for setup.

How much did you put on?

Thanks for the tip. The instructions say no preparation required but just apply to clean threads and joint. My guess is there was oil contamination because all I did was a wipe down with cloth patches. I also might’ve used too much. For round two, I cleaned off the uncurled Rockset, then thoroughly cleaned everything with acetone, and used less this time. It cured just fine.
