Modern Field Rifleman in Los Olivos weekend of September 5th

As featured in Recoil magazine! Put your shooting skills and equipment to the test in the real world on a 2 mile long field course through the Los Olivos hills, engaging targets using rocks, trees, tripods and backpacks with a target selection from 250-1,650 yards. This event is one that anyone serious about their shooting simply should not miss!



Day 1

• External ballistics lecture
• Proper utilization of ballistic calculator
• Wind theory
• Technique
• Rifle zeroing/zero confirmation

Day 2

• 7am start
• 2 mile long semi-strenuous hike with multiple shooting/target positions
• Positional shooting where gear is limited to what’s on your back
• Target range estimation
• Shots from 250-1200 yards through the Los Olivos hills

Participants should bring 150 rounds of ammo for both days, a ballistic calculator app (Applied Ballistics is preferred), sturdy hiking gear (footwear, clothes, sun protection, water, poles if needed) and a reliable way to carry their rifle (sling, backpack, etc). Water will be provided on day one, and will be placed along the course on day two but it’s recommended to bring some of your own as well as any food/snacks you may need. Thank you for the invitation. Do you do this a few times a year? I can see giving it a try next year. If I go to Los Olivos for a weekend of shooting, my wife will spend the time drinking Pinot Noir, so it's potentially a win-win situation.

Currently my experience with ballistics is shooting .22lr at 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards in standing, seated, and prone positions and switching between the different distances and making elevation adjustments in each stage. And hopefully next spring I'll have opportunities to do the same with centerfire at 100, 200, 300, and 400 yards. Maybe some service rifle-style events out to 600 yards. I feel like I'm still just starting out.

What kind of rifle do you recommend for this kind of long range shooting? I'm going to guess bolt action, but do people use semiautomatics? What round for those distances? Also, what kind of scope? If you were going to recommend a rifle and scope setup for someone starting out, what would it be? And what do you have for rent?
