Like many, I recently jumped in with Sig promotion of their MCX Reg with the P365 deal, still waiting for the Sig confirmation for the P365, but been playing with the Regulator ranch rifle since.
Not sure of reason there seems to be a short surge of ranch rifle design based on the existing AR style rifles. Key aspect is that they all use uppers that will fit “typically” a standard AR lower (with some additional parts). The original is the FightLight SCR, which was based on a design that came out of the CA AWB in the beginning. Now u have Sig, CMMG, Foxtrot Mike, all have their version of the “ranch” rifle.
Back to the Sig MCX Reg. I’ll give them an A for effort (it is a very well made rifle), but I doubt very much any cowboy would ride into the sunset with it. For one, it is way too heavy for a ranch rifle. Traditional lever action ranch rifle is < 7lbs, and mini-14 is also < 7lbs depend on furniture, MCX Reg advertise at 7.9lbs. It’s not just the weight, the rifle handles a bit front heavy, not well balanced. Frankly I question if it really just weight 7.9lbs. The MCX piston system just adds too much weight to the rifle.
Well, crap, already got the rifle, what to do? It is where the mall ninja part of me took over. MCX Reg has the standard MCX upper so… swap the barrel to a 9” 300BO, a new MW Ind 6” hand guard, and slap it on my Rattler converted lower, a well balanced PDW yes it is. Not to waste the MCX Reg lower, matched it up with the Brownells BN180 for a total of 7.1lbs. Also try it with Foxtrot Mikes FM-15 upper for a weight of 6.9 lbs. (modifications are required for the FM-15). Between the BN180 and the FM-15, I like the FM-15 feel the best.
So for those of us who bought the MCX Reg. There are options.
