I picked up my renewal a few weeks ago, from submission of renewal to pick up was about 60 days. I did do my training before submitting my renewal so was able to submit that right away with now delay, so I’m sure that helped

Any people here submit for renewal with different firearms? I intend to drop my 1911 Commander (huge pistol) for my sweet little Glock 43 (obtained just 1 month after my initial CCW). Anything I should know? Can I train on the new firearm prior to submittal?

You can definitely replace/add a new firearm when you renew as long as you qualify with that firearm during your renewal course. The renewal process is the only time you can replace/add new firearms. I replaced one of my prior firearms with a new one during my renewal process.

I submitted mine 90 days before. I did the training after they got back to me, and had the new card before 90 days was up.

I had to turn in my old card when picking up the new.

That's great news. I suspect that the ones who were going through the renewal process during the summer, including myself, had a slightly longer wait time due to a delay in issuing because during that time they had to recall all the CCWs that were issued earlier this year and change them to the 'blue cards'. But even then they finished my file pretty quickly and it was the call for pick up that took the longest. It sounds like they are back to completing renewals on an average of 2 months or less.

Congrats on your renewal. You don’t need to bring a money order or any type of payment since you already paid for everything when you started your renewal via permitium. Just make sure to have your CAL DL/ID and your old CCW permit. You will exchange your old one for the new CCW.

Update: Renewal approved. First available time for pick-up is almost exactly 5 weeks from now.

• Expiration Date: May 25
• Submitted renewal application: Feb 24th (89 days prior to exp.)
• Approved for training: March 25th (1 month after starting renewal process)
• Training Certificate submitted: March 26th
• Permit Approved: April 15 (less than 7 weeks from start, and less than 3 weeks since submitting training cert.)
• Pick up: May 19th (about 80 days after start)

Not too shabby. Seems like the longest wait is from final approval to pick up appointment.

Update: picked up my renewal today. It could not have been a more pleasant process. From the entrance guard at the driveway kiosk, to every single person and sheriff, everyone was incredibly courteous, respectful and helpful. The even texted me at 8am and told me to show up whenever I could, and as early as possible. From the time I was approved to my appointment time to pickup, I think they sped up the process.
Now, if I could only carry in any reasonable place, then it would really be worth it.

I have a question about the renewal process, why not complete the class days before you apply for the renewal so that when you make your payment, you also send proof of completion of the class to not cause any further delays?

It took me 1 week short of the 90 days from beginning to end. The longest wait was from final approval to pick-up, which was about 5 weeks. It looks like that now may be much faster.
I strongly recommend that you do not complete your training until AFTER you initiated the renewal process. My PTT email arrived almost exactly 1 month after starting the process, and said this:

• Training must be completed and received within 60 days from the date of this email, or your file will be withdrawn. No exceptions.
• ANY training completed prior to this email WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

The truth is, I did my training 1 week after starting renewal/3 weeks prior to that email, and was really nervous that it would be rejected. I figured, worst case, I will do it again. They didn't seem to care. I submitted my certificates the day after the PTT email.

As another update, I received an email from permitium about a month ago that they removed my primary firearm from my permit renewal application (was a change from my initial permit) since it did not come up registered to me. Turns out, I transposed 2 of the digits in my serial number. I sent them the DROS and tried to call with no reply. On the day I was scheduled to pick up the permit, I received a text and texted back my mistake. Upon arrival, they said "No problem. The serial number now looks correct and we put it back on." They fixed it that day. Again, they could not be more friendly and helpful.

I submitted my renewal 90 days in advance. Sent training as soon as I was approved and have final approval just waiting for pickup. Current permit expired June 15th, so hoping I get the call soon to pick up my new permit.

Given how hard my initial application process was I am a little nervous about the timeline for renewal. My initial application took over 22 months from application to pickup.

I just wanted to add a comment as I am up for renewal with my local PD in LA county. One of things that stood out was that my PD wrote on their website they could deny the renewal after everything has been submitted. So it might be the folks taking a little longer are in a different stack for further review.

Second, given the length of time of some renewals, our cards may expire and that might be the way the ball bounces. Which means we just don’t get to carry until the new card is ready.

If anything Permitium should make things easier... at least for you to keep track of your progress. I'm not so confident that LASD has a complete grasp on how Permitium works, that or they just don't have the resources to keep it accurately updated.

For example, the big yellowish block of text in the photo has not been removed despite the fact that I uploaded the required information the same day (5/1), as well as bringing a copy with me to my interview on 5/2. Probably nitpicking, but it should show that I provided the requested document (imho)... i.e it is no longer required.
