I got put on waitlist Dec 2024. Call back was October 2025. Appointment was late April 2026.

Today my application says pending background check.

Maybe one day.

It took me about 4 months total, and I would guess about 2 months of that was pending final approval and mailing it out. I kept checking the website for an earlier opening for the interview and was able to land one about 1.5 months sooner than the system originally gave me. Another guy on here was almost exact to the same timeframe as I was.

Getting my CCW through LAPD took exactly 54 weeks, measured from the initial email to getting the physical card in hand. Unfortunately, I delayed myself by 8 weeks because I had to reschedule the interview due to a work conflict.

What’s the lead time for interviews these days? When I was going through the process, they never had interview slots available sooner than 12 weeks out.

My friend waited about 1-2 months for the interview from when he applied. And he was on a waitlist to apply for a couple months

If you’ve had your in person interview, you should your class ASAP. You won’t clear captain’s review without the certificate. And if you wait too long, your application can be considered “abandoned.”

I was under the impression I would get a notice that I was cleared for training

Your investigating officer didn't tell you to take a class?

If you go to LAPD’s CCW page and/or Permitium page, it says when they want you to take the class.

LAPD also has an online PDF of approved classes.

Nothing stops anyone (who’s not a prohibited person) from taking a CCW class whenever they want. But your certificate must be within a specific timeline to meet LAPD’ recentness requirement.

Ahhhh, that’s an entirely different set of circumstances. If the interviewing officer said you might be denied, I have no idea when/if to take a class.

Before they sit down with you at the interview they have started the background. My investigator already knew about my history and affiliation with LAPD. He was asking questions from my Personal History Statement, had access to all my firearm information, arrest records, and any contact with the department - they may have more, but this was what I could gather from his questions.

There was a guy in the same room during my interview, and he got loud with the detective and the detective stood up and told him to calm down or he would be asked to leave. Apparently, he was told it would be unlikely he would be approved for a CCW.

At the end of my interview, the investigator told me to sign up for the class, get my qual and cert posted to Permitium. This is how it went for others in the interview so I assume there is something in your background that caused concern for the investigator.

I’m coming from a constitutional carry state so all of this is a joke to me. If they deny me my right I’ll take it as a sign to move. LA is kind of a hole anyway.

This is the guy that claims to have a TS/SCI but might not qualify for a CCW.... why do people lie so much online. If you have a squeaky clean TS SCI background you would easily get a CCW. Even many criminal charges don't prevent you from a CCW lol.

The vibe was basically “ummmmm…..I don’t know??” And they took a few copies of records I brought in.

I was told they would either move my application forward, or tell me to withdraw if they thought I would be denied. They sent a message saying they are going to move it forward, called my references, and it sat on pending background for two months before changing to captain review like two days ago I guess.

But I still haven’t been briefed on classes or moving forward in any way.
