Kydex Holster Making

Huge shout out to @ZeroFoxGiven who generously gave his time and materials to teach me the art of making Kydex holsters today! Not counting the one I cut incorrectly, we produced four IWB/AIWB holsters. Now I just need to adjust retention, mount a couple of claws and add a monolock clip to the 1911 holster. I feel confident that I could ALMOST do them on my own now...

First attempt on my own. OWB holster for a 4" Springfield XD9 with TLR1 light clone. Already cut for an optic and more than enough room for suppressor- height sights. I tried mounting with an IWB clip, but that was the wrong answer... OWB paddle clips inbound soon.

Got an idea today and used a piece of scrap kydex from a failed project. IWB Shield 1.0 single mag holder. Works for both 7 & 8 rounders, so it should work just fine with the Magguts kits!

When I got all these supplies, I got some of the thickie-boi Kydex, good for making clips as well. This took a lot longer than expected, and it sure doesn't look pro, but I can at least say I tried it and it works.

My super-pro molding process involved Popsicle sticks, MDF, painters tape and a Coke Zero can. But after it came out of the press, it still wasn't anywhere near right, so there was a lot of hand-forming after hitting it with the heat gun. Again and again and again.

For reference: the clip on the right is one you would order online, and was the inspiration for mine.

And finally finished up the XD OWB holster with a proper OWB style clip; works great!

I also made this yesterday! The leather sheath for my childhood deer knife disintegrated years ago and it's been, sadly, sitting in a drawer all this time. Now it has a proper home on my hip again!

As a side-note, my wife now insists I wear a mask and eyepro when working with this stuff. Some nonsense about microplastics and me living a long, healthy life with both eyes.

Hey, thanks! I appreciate the positive feedback.

Yes, there were quite a few tools I acquired that I didn't previously own. Kydex press, belt sander, arbor press with rivet dies, heat gun, clamps, hole reamer, various hand tools, dedicated toaster oven... not to mention the supplies. I basically started from scratch. I got a great deal from a great friend!
