KUSA KR9 “Kali9” deep dive

I know it's an older thread, but if your rifle is still chewing up brass load some rounds with incrementing crimps. Mine thrashed my dummy rounds in two dry fires, hadn't even taken the rifle out of the house after bringing it home from my FFL. I always check and try different ammo first before wrenching on a firearm so I started with a very light crimp and worked my way to a pretty snug crimp and that solved the problem. What I did from there was to size down my bullets to where the belling/flaring of my brass was just so that I really didn't have to crimp. I also had to seat my bullets a little deeper.
 
Show pic of your bolt in its entirety. Where the piston is attaches the carrier especially. That would show the truth on how long the kali9 can last.

There is a user on here selling a broken kali9, as not broken. But that user shared plenty on reddit, so I know its broken. Hopefully no one bought it.

The carrier is the weakest on kali9, and its proprietary. If it breaks, there is a gunsmith that can fix it, but it is not 100% failsafe. Best is to buy replacement....but company went under.
 
On my rifle, ammo has to be at 1.090". OP, get yourself a SHERIDAN case gauge and check all your factory and reloaded ammo.

Tried other picatiny mounts and wouldn’t fit either. They got back to be that sone dust covers went out out of spec so had to go back again. Left a bad taste with me and sold it when it got back.

Any clue at all what they did? I’m pretty mechanically inclined and I’ve been over this rifle with a fine tooth comb. I’m going to have to find an AK gunsmith who can diagnose it.

I found a thread where someone talked about using a short stroke recoil buffer to solve this issue. I think that would result in lower bolt velocities which may be an improvement. My gut says the recoil spring is too strong and the ammo is just bending even though the geometries are all good.

The other thought I had was to find some steel case ammo and see if it will eat that. But it doesn’t seem like steel case is super common.
 
Just finished "building" mine and started tinkering with the internals. I've replaced the firing pin with the KD Gunwerx pin (OEM failed after about 500rnds), added a reciprocating recoil spring guide rod, RD short stroke buffer, and ALG trigger w/braided spring. I keep all metal on metal contact surfaces lubed/greased. My only worry now is finding a replacement extractor.

Has anyone heard if any companies might pick this up and start making parts for it. Its great KD makes parts, but he is limited. This is what I feel is one of the best PCC's out there with the most potential to be even better. (Why I bought 2)

Was your rifle a low serial number or high serial number?
 
@zhyla This is some great information. I have been trying to locate one of these at a decent price/condition since parts and mags are scarese, until someone buys the rights from the defunt KUSA and starts making these again.

There are a few in the classifieds right now for decent prices. But I would buy the extra firing pin from KD. Saving up to send mine to rifle dynamics next

Hopefully they'll be back soon. I bought mine during the pandemic and also had the upgraded bolt done. This is one that I'll never sell or get rid of.
 
My KR9 is a lower serial, 900005XX. At first, it ran great—no issues after 1,000 rounds. During a range day, my buddy caused a double feed and unknowingly sent a round into the receiver. When he fired, the recoil spring assembly broke.

I picked up a PSA AK-74 recoil spring assembly and a Rifle Dynamics short-stroke buffer, since I read that was pretty much my only option. But ever since, I’ve been getting light primer strike malfunctions almost every few rounds.

I tried KD’s upgraded firing pin—didn’t fix it. Tried an ALG high-power hammer spring—still didn’t fix it. It wasn’t until I installed a Wolff high-power recoil spring that I was finally able to get through a full mag without a light primer strike. I still get light primer strikes more often than I’d like, so I’m picking up another KR9 that comes with a lot of extra parts in hopes of fixing the issue for good.

I’ve talked to a bunch of owners and gunsmiths online, and no one has seen the issue as bad as I’m experiencing. I just wanted to post this in case anyone else runs into the same problem. I love the AK platform and the KR9—that’s why I’m picking up a second one.
