It does sound obnoxious in that context but the judge acknowledged he acted in self defense and basically he got probation for carrying without a permit. sounds like no criminal record as long as he's a good boy. I think he was talking to him like daddy judge lol

For my Hunter's Safety Class, when I was 12 years old, in Phoenix, they brought in a man that had the side of his face mutilated by an exploding shotgun to give the talk about why you shouldn't cary different size shells when you're hunting. If I remember correctly, he threw a 410 shell into his 12 gauge and when it didn't go off he threw in a 12 gauge shell and fired. The 410 blocked the barrel causing the explosion. Or something like that. Oh, and we also had live fire, had to demonstrate safely climbing over a barbed wire fence, etc. it really drove home every points. I wonder if they still do stuff like that today.

So, a good guy with a gun has the occasion to take out a bad guy with a gun at a mall, and the judge can't figure out why a good guy would CCW a gun? It's exactly for moments like these.

The judge needs logic classes and/or better sleep.

Just to play devils advocate a little bit, I think it’s important to remember the context of the “poor judgement” quote.

19 isn’t exactly a child, but the judge was speaking to someone too young to legally obtain a CCW who was carrying anyway. Too young to purchase a handgun legally in Michigan.

I’m pretty sure we all carry guns in malls. It’s not poor judgment and a non-issue, assuming you’re of age and checked all the legal boxes.

It happened to end positively in this one in instance. But in general I don’t think anybody wants teenagers running around malls with guns. Now consider the punishment. The kid gets to talk to a therapist and go through some gun safety classes. Maybe not a bad idea if you’ve shot a man dead in a mall at 19. If he doesn’t get into trouble, his record is expunged and he can buy a firearm and get a CCW and carry it the rest of his adult life.

This seems like a pretty straight forward positive for everyone involved.

We can’t be telling kids it’s totally cool for you to illegally carry concealed guns around as long as you REALLY need ‘em when the time comes.
