Saw this on Reddit. Seems the deceased was an old school hobbyist and reloader, some of the stuff in the picture are for blackpowder, he reloaded for 577 Snider, which I haven't even heard of, but then again I am not into black powder. It's a shame the kids or grandkids were clueless what to do these and gave them away to the cops. I wonder if he was an old time Calgunner back in the day. What other interesting stuff are there? Just curious.

I saw several pictures of the dies. There was some nitro express stuff as well. Lots of valuable and fairly scarce stuff is now gone forever.

I see some pretty sizeable cases there I wonder if he was doing ELR experimentation. I used to know a guy that was doing development for loads that don't exist necking down .458, .50 and .338 cartridges to various smaller calibers with high BCs to push the limits of what's possible at 1500-2000Y.

You'd be pretty surprised what can be achieved with a really high BC pill and a ton of powder behind it, but the whole barrel harmonics and custom shoulder /barrel build and twist rates situation makes it far from an entry level game. He was going through barrels like most of us go through load dev trying to find the sweet spots.

1500 yards doesn't require anything exotic at all. There are all sorts of off the shelf rifles and ammo that can do that.

I see what is likely an old guy who shot cartridges of his time. In 30 or 50 years, people will look at 6.5 creedmoor the way you look at 577 snider.

If you're competitive in the ELR space you are absolutely reloading some finely tuned cartridges. Military snipers shooting at these ranges often are walking shots in with as many as 6-10 stringers along the way whenever you read these world record confirmed kill stories. Not that it's any less impressive, but there are people in this world trying to succeed with cold bore 1500 yard hits and they're not using black hills off the shelf ammo to do it. Hardened vehicle interdiction is another affair. You need to be pretty far away from an airbase if you're disabling planes with your metal messages to possibly avoid a QRF and the amount of time you have after starting the party to move is obviously very short you can't sip your Mojito in between shots and twizzle your scope nipples.

I gurantee you what ever papaw had in the safe was interesting. No doubt it was a life long passion.
At least I can rest easy at night knowing that when I'm gone there's a bunch of gun nuts in my family that will appreciate the collection.

Also looks like the deceased was probably into cigars, noticed the Cuesta-Rey Coronas box. Most likely he was a blackpowder competitor back in the day. I love digging into old stuff like this.

Sir I have no idea what constitutes long or extremely long to you, but I don't claim to have ever shot more than 1230 yards and when I've done so it was utilizing fanciful custom loads of the 6m dasher finnish wind tickler variety.


Long range shooting.org defines it as anything over 1200 yards but maybe that's a regular weekend for you and you're not impressed.

I'm not sure what you imagine the practical purposes of loading highly specialized rounds and necking down the largest brass and chambers money can buy to high BC small bullets (as some of the cool looking reloading supplies above recall visions of) but the folks I know who aim to achieve such feats seem to pursue the endeavor for pretty practical purposes.

If you reread what I'm saying above it's not implying shooting at airplanes while they are flying, it's an implication towards the primary purpose of anti materiel rifles and calibers like the 20mm existing, which between it and the 14.5 necked down to very high BC pills in the .338 or even .284 region(again as pictured above) give you exceptional range and consistency as compared to off the shelf 20mm designed for spraying the hillside out of chromelined water cooled barrels.

I saw a TV program about the Marine Corps sniper school. Those guys load their own ammo. It's very precise to assure consistency. They measure and weigh each bullet.

The snipers themselves are, or the armorers? Surprised to hear this woulda figured they'd be using black hills or something contracted for sure.

There are great consistent options for factory ammo in ordinary calibers like .308 but actual ELR missions seem highly specialized compared to "ordinary" sniper deployments.

Would imagine the saltiest gunny is the one for that sort of thing

Mohawk was a Remington ammo product line, nothing all that special but from the... 70s I believe. I don't know anything about cigars and wouldn't pretend to, but I've got a couple cigar boxes full of oddball ammo I've collected by acquiring lots like this. It seems they were somewhat commonly used as storage containers for other stuff as well.

I agree, lots of cool old history there and because of scarcity, value. I shoot several cartridges that are now considered odd or rare, because I've stumbled into ownership over the years. It's unlikely this stuff was, as courage wolf seems to think, being used as custom wildcats to overthrow small foreign nations.

No one is necking down 577 Snider to make custom wildcat crazy long range rounds. That's comical at best.
