who has experience in the unit? I’ve set up wall tents outside of Challis a few times and also been packed into the Frank. Going budget and easy next year and plan on just hunting out of Challis. It will be interesting to see if there is lower pressure with the new non resident tag quotas.

If you have a spout you can get elevation @ I’m sure you’ll be fine . I hunted just south of 36 and no one was higher than 1000’ Above the roads

Yote, glad to see you over here. Hopefully we can get the hunting section off the ground. I have spots I can definitely get 1000’ above the road. I like to find spots where I can gain that elevation and glass country you can not see from any roads. When did you hunt south of 36?

2 weeks ago. Are you planning on hunting the early part of general or trying to work the weather and hope animals come down?
This year was goofy with the weather and even when I was up there was very little snow. 1000’ above any road + 1000’ off trail and I saw 8 bucks and only 2 does my first day. Most guys I talked to (locals from Stanley / Chablis / arco ) hadn’t seen a legal buck in almost a week of hunting . Clearly they were not interested in the work it took to get that high. I was solo so I notched my tag first day with a medium 3x4 in case what I was seeing was a fluke .

Nice work! We will be there for rifle opener, as long as we all get tags right when Idaho F&G opens up. I would have done the same as you, I’m not going to try and hold out for a monster if I can knock a decent buck down early in our hunt. Agree weather is a game changer when we packed into the frank it was like a ghost town, we got snow and all of a sudden bucks were all over the place.

This is an old discussion, but I've wanted to hunt elk in Idaho or Montana for a long time. Made plans with a buddy who developed serious knee issues. I've hunted deer on public and private land in CA, mostly from a blind with a bow. I'm wondering if there is anyone on this thread who could give me some advice. I looked into guided hunts, but the cost is crazy. Any advice is welcome.

I love hunting, do it a lot! Out of state is foreign to me. Have always considered it but Utah rather than Idaho. The risk reward function of it is massively higher for me. I feel like if I bought an out of state tag and took the time and money and failed I’d be so mad at myself it wouldn’t be worth it

I used to hunt in California Zone D6 where the success rate is 5%. That means only 1 out of 20 hunters bag a deer, so my expectations aren't huge. I love hunting also, it's in our DNA, but fortunately if I fail, I can still go to the grocery store where the cost per pound is considerably less than hunted game.

It’s an adventure . Sometimes you need to jump. Go look at zones you can get a tag for.
And scout / camp / fish to learn it and go back during season. If you kill deer in Ca . Killing one out of state is much simpler
