Has anyone gotten into .17?

I did. Amassed thousands of rounds so far but I only have one. A psa lower with bca upper. 99% reliable

if you are just going to google stuff you can google all the animals that people haven't ethically killed over 100 yards with 17 hmr. Like I said, if you like it go shoot it but I hate hunting undergunned, I don't care if it's varmints they still deserve clean kills. Like if you are shooting prairie dogs and all of a sudden you have coyotes but you can't take that shot because you are undergunned. There's a lot of limitations if you try to do the bare minimum and if you are actually killing things it matters more. Even watching a ground squirrel pull itself back into it's hole hobbled is not that fun to watch.

You’re not “undergunned” with a .17 hmr. You have to know the limitations of it, just like all calibers, to make an ethical shot.

17 hmr is great for:

1) hunting with CA approved ammo
2) not have to conform to CA AW restrictions
3) new shooters (easy to adjust the rifle and low recoil)
4) hunting under 100 yards (friend used it and dropped a coyote at 60 yards)

The Remington 597 .17 HMR was my first rifle. I stopped shooting it once Remington put out a recall on them because they were blowing up.

I’d add it can be great for head shots on rabbits in the 40-100 yard range. No meat damage unlike hunting cottontails with my 12 and 20 gauge guns.

When Rabbit season opens up I strap my 17hmr rifle to my back while carrying a shotgun in my hands. Shotty for the closer jump shots, and the 17 for the rabbits I’m lucky enough to see one out past 50 yards.
